Hi, thank yo so much for this posting as my husband and I will visit San Francisco next month. And like you we are on a tight budget... So we would definitely like to do as much as we could for as little cost as possible. So your review was very helpful. I am glad I read your pros and cons about the gocard, so we are going to prepare for the worst and wish for the best!!!! :)

I justed visited San Francisco and LOVED it! Alcatraz was AWESOME! I stayed at The Mosser on 4th & Market and was VERY pleasantly surprised. The price was right and it was VERY nice. Not supreme luxury, but it was clean, very nicely decorated, with a friendly, helpful staff. I opted to go the economical route by taking a room with a shared bathroom. Now I know this sounds like it would be bad, but I had NO problem with this at all! There was a men's and women's "toliet closet" and two shower rooms on my floor. They were CLEAN and I only had to wait for a shower one time for about 5 minutes ( I was there for 4 days). There is a sink and mirror in the room so one can get fix their hair, brush their teeth, etc. right in their room. My room was straightened and cleaned each day and and fresh towels were provided. If you want to see SF on a budget, stay at The Mosser. I will stay there again!

Thanks for the info on the GoCard. A few friends and I were planning a trip to San Francisco and we weren't sure if the GoCard was worth the price. Alcatraz looks like it's a blast.

SF native here ! Just wanted to let you know. Parking in SF can be a little difficult. If your staying in the downtown area look into public transportation, buses (muni), BART, cabs, and not to mention the famous cable cars ! So you may not need to rent a car for the entire 11 day trip. But then again again it depends on what your wanting to do. Hope this helps. Have a great trip !!!

We will be visiting San Francisco on July 4th weekend. we decided to stay in Oakland and take the ferry to the Wharf. We plan to go on the Blue and Gold cruise first thing in the morning and then see as much as we can at the Wharf the rest of the day. We are a tight budget so any suggestions would be helpful(my husband loves seafood).

There are a bunch of seafood places all along Fisherman's Wharf. I am a little picky about seafood, as I love Fish & Chips, but that's about it. There is a little fish and chip place I mentioned in my journal that you should check out. It's a little pricy, but was quite good.

Hi, your trip seems so interesting. I am planing of going to San Francisco next month, and I am worried whether I should rent a car for the trip. I've no idea whether the public transportation in San Francisco is as good as New York or it is bad as Los Angeles. Hope to hear your opinion about that. Thank you :)
