Traveling to Ghana to do a little volunteer work, travel … More
Traveling to Ghana to do a little volunteer work, travel, and see some soccer. We'll be based in Accra for the first couple weeks and then traveling around the second two weeks.
This was a very nice hotel in Elmina. Our double with an extra person cost 125 CD.
Hotel
Sat Jan 26 12:00am - Sun Jan 27 12:00am
Notes
This place was a bit expensive but the grounds were very nice. In the morning they had an excellent free western style breakfast. Dinner was also very good.
Taking the buses in Ghana is a good experience as long as you get on the ones with A/C. Check the schedules in advance and plan to get their early to buy the tickets. The ones without A/C are one step above a tro tro.
Beyin (130km westo of Takoradi) is the departure point for the Nzulezu stilt village. Take a canoe trip one hour …More
Thing to Do
Ghana
Wed Jan 30 12:00am
Notes
This was the only disappointment of the trip. It cost us $30 by taxi to get from Axim to the village. The canoe ride cost 9 and the admisssion fee was another 5 per person. Although it was a great canoe ride the people of Nzulezu we not welcoming. They seemed to just be looking for a handout. On the one hand I feel like it is good to encourage tourism but these people seemed to think tourism means free money.
Park with canopy walkway. Mix of rainforest and semideciduous forest.
Thing to Do
Thu Jan 31 12:00am - Fri Feb 1 12:00am
Notes
You can do the canopy walk for free if you schedule a guide for the morning or night. The problem is that you have to go there to schedule the guide which will cost you if you don't have your own car. We did the canopy walk mid-day and didn't see any animals. It was very fun though.
12km from Kakum National Park. Rooms from USD$25. A/C in some rooms. Reservation confirmed for the 29th - 1st
Hotel
Thu Jan 31 7:00pm - Fri Feb 1 9:00am
Notes
Hans Cottage was not a bad place for the price. However, out of all the places we stayed I think this was the worst place. I would probably stay back at Coconut Grove (more expensive) and take a taxi up to the park. Also the restaurant food at Hans was not good.
All of this sounds so exciting to me, my husband is from Ghana. I plan to go visit in early fall with a friend. I have been to Accra and Koforidua. Hope you have a exciting time. God Bless.
This is a note to poohghgh, I need to talk to you. I am planning to start a B&B in Tema. I also plan to visit Tema in August of '08 but having trouble getting tickets.
Anyone with good info who has visited accra yet I'm planning my first trip to accra and surrounding areas please tell me of good hotels or apartments to rent and how much does it cost rent a car or would it be best to get a local taxi or tro tro ! As I have read .And who has the best tickets so far I saw the cheapest with North American Airline !
We took KLM from the US to get there. I think Delta also goes from NYC. KLM was pretty good and as I mentioned earlier you can get a discount ticket but just make sure you get travel insurance in case you need to make changes. A friend let us use their apartment so I can't say much about hotels in Accra. I wouldn't suggest a car. Taxis are cheap enough and if you can take the bus or tro tro for longer distances.
MY BEST ROUTE IS WITH NWA TO NETHERLAND, FROM THERE VIA KLM TO ACCRA. TRY TO BOOK YOUR TRAVEL WITH A TRAVEL AGENT. MY LAST TRIP--JAN 2007-- COST ME $1200.
