Starting in Peru

i am really looking forward to this trip. if you are around at this time leave me a note at info at evotegra dot de. I am arriving on 29th of January.

I got here. Finally. The 14 hours on planes sucked like hell. My legs are not quite tailorfit for this. The pickup from the hostel at the airport just worked out perfect. It really made things much easer. The hostel is a nice place with friendly staff and travellers. I am quite wasted now, but I have to stay awake for a few more hours.

So I am off to Pizco today. I had a great time here at the hostel but now its time to move on. There was an earthquake at Pisco last year that destroyed several houses and hostels as well. So I am not quite sure what to expect. Havent had a chance to book a hostel in advance so I will spend some time on finding acceptable accomodation.
Chewing Coca-leaves (legal here) is fun. Combined with some strange black powder bought from a witch at the market the effect of 10 leaves is remarkably strong. The tongue and cheek gets partially numb and you feel a slight energizing effect. Cocaleaves are used mainly as a drug against the height-sickness here

I made Pisco just a one night stop. The city was badly destroyed by the earthquake 6 month ago. I would guess that at least 50% of the housing infrastructure was destroyed. Not much was rebuilt since then. Little help has reached the people. Still you can see right into the living room fo many houses. The hostel I stayed in was newly rebuilt and quite nice. I got invited by a nice local to see how he is living now. His whole house had collapsed. Fortunatelly nobody of his family was harmed. Now he is living in slum-like conditions. I tried to help out.

Exciting trip specially when you got to see CUZCO All the sacrificies really pay off

Hey, great story...My daughter live in Vichayito on the beach road near Mancora...I met alot of really wonderful but strange characters while I was there as well. But, it is a wonderful place. Most of my time was spent on the coastal desert of Peru...As far south as Lima and traveled as far north to the Guayiguil Airport in Ecuador...South America from my little pin hole view is fabulous!!! Thanks for sharing..
