Every two-hours or so (the times never seem to be exact) visitors are treated to the changing of the guards at the Martyr's Shrine. Two rifle-carrying military police stand rigid at attention and then end their shift with a robotic march. Half of the fun of this daily event is watching some of the more daring, or depending on your point of view, the more annoying, tourists try to taunt the guards into flinching while they stand at attention, or join them when it comes time to march. Admission is free.
Take Red MRT to Jiantan Station. Near The Grand Hotel.

Bus 260 leaves from Zhengzhou Road (the road directly behind Taipei Main Railway Station) for the park every ten minutes, traveling along Zhongshan North Road, and turning right onto Jung-zhen Road in Shilin. The journey from Taipei Main Station takes about forty minutes and costs NT$30. There is no fee to enter the park. From Red MRT station Jiantan, bus Red 5 leaves for park every 15 minutes.
At the top of YangMingShan, you will be awared with a stunning vantage view of it. It is a good place to stop and rest your feet. Also, I recommend finding a tea house up in the hills (there are lots of these) to take a view, sip some tea, and try some of the local yangmingshan delicacies (including the bamboo shoots and local chicken).
The highlight of the trip, QianShan Park (other side of YangMingShan). Qianshan Park is laidback paced, entirely diferent from the bustling city. This park is a hive of activity, with people singing karaoke, enjoying picnics on a spread out blanket or sitting around in fold-up chairs talking or playing cards.
There are a few wandering masseurs offering quick muscular relief, and vendors outside the park entrance sell a number of different snacks, fruit and refreshments.
Definitely go during a weekday to avoid all the city folks trying to get away for some fresh air.
Across the street are public hot spring baths, one for women and the other for men. The baths, while simple, are free and the water quality is superb. ps: bring your own towel and enough immodesty to get natural in front of a bunch of strangers.
