You can still have an island experience here on Whidbey Island. At 45 miles in length, Whidbey is one of the largest islands in the continental United States. Only 30 miles from Seattle, it's also a popular weekend getaway for Seattleites who come here seeking tranquillity and relaxation. Never more than a few miles wide, Whidbey offers views of the water at seemingly every turn of its winding country roads. Farms, forests, bluffs, and beaches provide the foregrounds to the aquatic vistas, and two historic villages, Langley and Coupeville, offer the same sort of quaint settings people expect from the San Juans. Old wooden commercial buildings have been restored and now house excellent restaurants, art galleries, and unique shops. Charming bed-and-breakfast inns (and one of the state's most luxurious small hotels) pamper visitors to the island and provide the romantic surroundings that are so much a part of the Whidbey experience. - Frommers

This is one of the most luxurious and romantic inns in the Northwest. With its weathered cedar shingles, exposed beams, works of contemporary art, and colorful garden, the inn evokes all the best of life in the region, and the guest rooms have a Zen-like quality that soothes and relaxes. The inn's four floors jut out from a bluff overlooking Saratoga Passage, and with 180-degree views from every room, you'll have plenty of opportunities to spot orca whales and bald eagles. While the bedrooms and balconies are luxurious enough, the bathrooms are the star attractions. Each comes with an open shower and a double whirlpool tub that looks out over the water. Pull back an opaque sliding window and you also get a view of the room's fireplace. - Frommers

The bounty of Whidbey Island, which produces a mouth-watering variety of seafood and produce, serves as the basis for the gourmet meals served at this tiny restaurant. Complex sauces, unexpected flavor combinations, and impeccably fresh ingredients all add up to memorable meals. A recent meal began with an egg filled with divine white-truffle custard and then moved on to a sweet corn consommé with tomatoes and cherries and a salad of chanterelle mushrooms and lentils. Entrees included roast quail with zucchini blossom stuffing and halibut with honey-drizzled Penn Cove mussels. Although dinners don't come with matched wines for each course, there is a superb wine list that includes lots of excellent half-bottles of wine. All in all, meals here are unforgettable and are best paired with a stay at the Inn at Langley. - Frommers
