Our wonderful holiday in Romania and Bulgaria - Aug, 2007
A trip from August 02, 2007 to August 28, 2007, travelling to Bucharest, Sibiu, Cluj-Napoca, Piatra …
We just returned from a wonderful trip to S/E-Europe. We … More
We just returned from a wonderful trip to S/E-Europe. We had only read about the beauties of Romania and Bulgaria but what we encountered during this trip was beyond our wildest expectations. We landed in Bucharest and travel throughout Romania, starting with Bucharest. We visited Transylvania with all it's medieval castles and fortifications (including the Dracula Caslte in Bran - which we sadly discovered was actually not related to Dracula at all....). The northern part of Romania is the most picturesque one. Traditional villages with people still traveling by horse, unique churches and monasteries (some of them even UNESCO listed). The exterior frescoes of the painted monasteries in Bukovina (or northern Moldova) were literally breathtaking. The Romanian and Bulgarian Black Sea coast region is certainly a holiday destination itself. My wife fell in love with it's soft beaches. We visited the Aladjah monastery with it's cells carved in the steep rock. Also interesting was the island of Nessebar with it's traditional architecture. (I think all houses there are either souvenir shops or restaurants). We just hope we would have had more time to enjoy this places some more. For everything we have to thank our wonderful guide Serban Capatana (serban@welcome2romania.ro) who accompanied us throughout this trip and made all necessary arrangements.
get a room at Ceahlaul hotel and you will have a wonderful view upon the city. just an hour away you will find a natural park with the Bicaz Cliffs and the Red Lake. When you get there, take your time and walk around.
don't hesitate to sleep at one of the farmers' houses along the route. and take your time especially in the morning and in the evening to admire the scenery. if you manage to be there on special celebrations or on sunday... well, it's a treat to be able to see farmers still dressed up in their traditional outfits.
there are many monasteries and churches with exterior paintings, but the ones which we were impressed with were especially Voronet "The Sistine Chapel of the East", Sucetita monastery - especially seen from the hilltop behind the monastery, Arbore - for it's original painting which is so very different from all other monasteries and Dragomirna monastery, which is not painted on the exterior, but is totally original from the architectural design: slim, slender and richly ornated.
This is the largest salt mine in Romania and it's really high. You have to imagine that you descend into the underground and find yourself in a huge room with dozens of other people around you, contest taking place there, therapy and even sports events are organized there.
....well, we were so prepared with garlic and crosses, but our guide told us the real story of the castle: Dracula didn't even visit it :-((( Sadly. But, as a medieval castle it's a marvelous piece of architecture. And for vampire fans there is a "haunted house" just at the entrance to the castle. beware, there are no puppets, but actors inside!!
