I hadn't originally scheduled this activity, but when my son saw the boats he asked to take a ride. I'm 5 foot 10, and the pedaling was a bit uncomfortable, because I couldn't fully extend my leg. Also, my son tired pretty quickly, so I ended up doing the bulk of the pedaling.
He enjoyed the pedal boats a lot, so much so that we returned on Friday.

If you're going to see this memorial, see it BEFORE you see the Lincoln Memorial, which is much more impressive. Neither my son nor I were moved by this memorial - sorry, Thomas.

We ordered time-specific tickets in advance to go to the top of the Monument. Not that interesting for those who have seen views from great heights (Eiffel Tower, Empire State Building, Space Needle, etc.) before.
No gift shop at the monument, but there is one down the hill after you exit - maybe 400 feet away.
