Well, I know that Europe has a LOT more public transportation than the US, so I would take advantage of this. They have buses, trains, and underground trains (the underground trains are usually only in big cities, like London and Paris). If you think gas is expensive in the US, the prices in Europe are worse! Just remember that the exchange rate of dollars to euros is NOT in the United States favor. I dont know the exact exchange rate, but it takes more than one dollar to equal one euro. If you choose to travel outside the UK, I would definately recommend Paris. I know everyone goes there, but it is a nice place to visit. I would also recomment going over to Ireland since you'll be very close (Dublin!) Well, I hope this helped a little!
