Just the type of restaurant you might expect to find in the Marina/Cow Hollow: overpriced, overly dark, pseudo-Japanese food that is more style than substance. To be fair, the food is actually not bad. In fact, several of the dishes we had were pretty tasty. But the portions were pretty small (ok if you consider Umami a small plates place), especially the kanpachi carpaccio which was possibly the highlight of the meal in terms of taste. Yes, carpaccio is supposed to be thin but at least give me some surface area! The "shaking beef" was also solid but just not enough for the price. There are plenty of other places to go in the area so I would avoid Umami unless you really want to sit in near-darkness while surrounded by people you would rather see than hear. Note: I believe Umami is owned by the same people who own Mamacita.
