Parramatta has much to affer the history-minded visitor to Sydney. A casual 45 minute ferry ride alog the Parramatta River (from Circular Quay) will take you to Sydney's first real outpost. A settlement was established here just weeks after the First Fleet landed. It became the fledgling colony's farming capital before also housing the original Government House, which can still be visited in Parramatta Park. This building, along with the Dairy Cottage are two of the oldest remaining buildings in Australia. The Park is one of the earliest sites of Aboriginal/European contact.
If you would like to travel somewhere different while in Sydney, give Parramatta a try. It has a wonderful visitor's centre - just 200 metres from the Ferry Wharf. Also try beautiful Lake Parramatta or Westfield Shopping Centre - one of the biggest undercover shopping centres in the Southern Hemisphere.
