We thoroughly enjoyed our experience on the Pride of America. We loved that we just unpacked once and took our floating hotel from island to island. The itinerary allowed us to travel at night so that we could maximize our daytime hours. We thought it was a great "sampler" trip, allowing us to see four islands in a week. We also were happy with the "Freestyle Cruising" for a trip like this. It was very flexible, allowing us to eat early or late and to try a variety of restaurants. We made reservations as soon as we got on board and it all worked well. The staff were great. We treated them like we would like to be treated and they were very accomodating, gracious and friendly. Overall, a great way to see Hawaii if you're interested in seeing more than one or two islands.

We were offered the option by NCL to upgrade from a standard balcony cabin to a Penthouse Suite for just under $700 and we were SO GLAD we took the option. The balcony alone was larger than our other stateroom would have been. It was wonderful to have the extra space with our daughter along. We also really enjoyed having Suite Service breakfast on our balcony several mornings, and other VIP perks that just made it all the more special.

Booked through http://www.vacationstogo.com/ (Sheryl Somejo) in Honolulu (ph. #(808) 441-2415). Penthouse Suite #10520.

This was our favorite upcharge restaurant. We loved the Tempura Mushrooms and Crab Cakes offered as appetizers, and the Filet Mignon was tender and perfectly prepared. We dined the first night before sailing at half price. Check also about discounted pricing for early or late dining times at any of the upcharge restaurants. This one was well worth the small extra amount, and we enjoyed it twice!

4 mi inland off Hwy. 19, near Honomu, HI, USA. http://www.google.com/maps?q=Honomu,
A meandering 10-minute loop trail takes you to the best spots to see the two cascades, 'Akaka and Kahuna. The 400-foot Kahuna Falls is on the lower end of the trail. The majestic upper 'Akaka Falls drops more than 442 feet, tumbling far below into a pool drained by Kolekole Stream amid a profusion of fragrant white, yellow, and red torch ginger. COST: Free. OPEN: Daily 7-7.

Akaka Falls and VNP are in opposite directions, as a look at the map will show you. You'll need to turn around at Akaka. Plan about 2 hours to do this, 30 min. each way and an hour at the Falls.

NOTE: To save time skip the Kahuna Falls, which are mostly obscured by foliage now. Akaka Falls are lovely, though, and had a beautiful rainbow at the bottom when we were there.
May have time to grab lunch in Hilo afterwards. (We returned to the ship, which was quick...and free!) May also pack a lunch from the ship for a picnic at VNP. (Bring baggies for packing lunch.)

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is about a 45 minute drive from Hilo. You should be able to go to the Visitor Center, the museum, the Thurston Lava Tube and drive the Crater Rim. Take picnic lunch, flashlight, good walking shoes, lots of water, binocs, bug spray, rain jacket.
NOTE: There is a section of the Thurston Lava Tube that you can explore with a flashlight. You enter through the gate at the end of the lighted section of the tube, where the stairs go back up to ground level. It is a memorable experience.

We ended up taking this drive on a whim, after we had visited the Ioa Valley and were heading to Lahaina. Being mountain drivers, we were quite comfortable with the winding road and sections that were one-lane. The few drivers we encounted in these areas were all very curteous, and the spectacular scenery was well worth the trip. The website I have linked to features the drive from west to east. We did it in reverse, of course.

Of all the banyan trees in Hawaii, this is the greatest of all -- so big that you can't get it in your camera's viewfinder. It was only 8 feet tall when it was planted in 1873 by Maui sheriff William O. Smith to mark the 50th anniversary of Lahaina's first Christian mission. Now it's more than 50 feet tall, has 12 major trunks, and shades 2/3 acre in Courthouse Square.
Next to Old Lahaina Courthouse across from Lahaina Harbor, it marks the center of town.
NOTE: There are now many vendors (and some apparent vagrants) set up under the tree. Hard to photograph. Lahaina, in my opinion, has lost much of it's charm in recent years to commercialism. It's bordering on becoming a tacky tourist-trap in areas. We didn't spend much time there, with so many much-more-inviting options.

This was a very memorable day. One gorgeous vista after another! We used the Maui Revealed guide book, which steered us to little known scenic spots. We hiked 10 minutes in to a lovely waterfall and had it totally to ourselves! The joy is more in the journey than the destination on this excursion. Since the ship had overnighted in port, we already had our rental car. We left by 7:30 a.m., ahead of the herd, and took our time enjoying the sights at a leisurely pace. You may want to pack a picnic lunch. There's not much to recommend for dining in Hana. For a novel experience, you may want to stop at Hasegawa's General Store in Hana. It has the most amusingly impressive collection of "stuff" in the most random order. (Toilet paper next to the propane, etc.) We grabbed some snacks and a few good laughs.

NOTE: We had included this as an option for day 4, but opted for the Road to Hana instead, since there were more varied scenic opportunities and we had been to Haleakala before.

Park headquarters and the 10,023 foot summit can be reached from Kahului via Route 37 to 377 to 378. Driving time to the summit from Kahului is approximately 1.5 hours. An admission fee of $10.00 per vehicle is charged at the park entrances.
Be prepared for a variety of conditions. Temperatures in the summit area commonly range between 32 and 65 degrees F; wind-chill can dramatically drop the temperature below freezing at anytime of year.
Hike down the Sliding Sands trail into the crater.

Two best view points are the ones down from the crater. Leleiwi is the least used and has NO bus parking. Just walk across the road and you'll shortly find yourself at an overlook that has amazing views that seem to put you IN the crater.

We had a reservation to dine at the Jefferson Bistro on Tuesday, since it was optional formal night, but ended up dining here after discovering that the Jefferson Bistro menu, which features limited choices with many seafood items, was not very workable with our food allergies. (We should have reviewed the menu before booking.) The staff were very accomodating in arranging for us to be seated immediately at a fabulous window table in the Skyline, and we had a most enjoyable meal. (Not gourmet, but very good.) The service was terrific.

Talk about this trip (2)
We honeymooned on the Big Island, Maui, Kauai and Oahu 25 years ago and wanted to return to these islands in celebration of our Silver Anniversary and to share some special spots with our 21-year-old daughter.

We are an adventuresome family, that loves to squeeze every wonderful experience that we can out of our vacations. (Our theme seems to be "See it ALL!") My husband is "Mr. Go" and makes sure that our fun is "efficient," so he keeps us running. I like to take time to smell the roses and seize the moment, capitalizing on opportunities for fun where we find them. Our daughter, bless her heart, goes with the flow (right up until the 6th 6:00 a.m. or earlier morning in a row!) None of us are real willing to sacrifice sightseeing and adventure time for shopping, and we don't spend a lot of time lying on the beach. But we do come home with tons of pictures and the wonderful memories to go with them.

We thoroughly enjoyed cruising on the Pride of America on this trip. It allowed us to travel at night and not worry about packing in and out of hotels or going through the whole routine involved in island hopping, like we did on our previous trip. Because time in each port was limited, we took advantage of every hour we could by getting up early and heading off the ship by 8:00 a.m. (or earlier if overnight in port.) We found it wasn't too difficult since the time difference was in favor of our body clocks in the morning.

Evenings on board were relaxing. We enjoyed lovely, leisurely dinners but didn't spend much time taking in the on board entertainment options. We preferred savoring the time together on the balcony of our suite while at sea, and turning in before midnight. It seemed that many others were approaching things the same way, so there wasn't abundant night life to miss.

After disembarking in Honolulu, we were ready for some relaxing time on the north end of the island, and found the Turtle Bay and North Shore area fit the bill perfectly. We slept in (!), enjoyed a leisurely morning in a lovely condo on the golfcourse and headed out to snorkel and lay on the beach, before exploring the North Shore beaches.

The trip had a little bit of everything, and a whole lot of FUN! We just loved it. One of our favorite trips ever...and we travel quite a bit.
