I've done two trips very similar to this and both were fantastic. The Grand Canyon is amazing and Arches National Park is a wonderful place to spend a couple of days.

my wife and I are doing a similar trip this June, and we chose to fly in/out of Phoenix. Vegas was our other thought, but that town is just not for us.

My husband amd A did a trip last October and will do again this October to Southern Utah. We will fly in and out of Las Vegas. We've found that flights are plentiful and you can find good deals. Also, I've found that rental cars are alot cheaper and the drive northeast into Utah is very picturesque. We're not "Vegas" people, but to spend one night after our arrival and before we leave worked best. There's a lot to see besides slot machines - do some searching. We were pleasantly surprised.
