Express bus E95 operates 24 hours between the airport and Syntagma Square every 30 minutes. The bus stop is outside the National Gardens on Amalias on the eastern side of Syntagma Square. The journey takes between an hour and 90 minutes, depending on traffic.

Anyway, I said, if you just want to go to Thessaloniki, take the train. It is fast, easy, comfortable, and cheap. Do not take bus, it is very slow!
Driving condition is okay, I guess. I did not drive in Athens, I can't really tell. However, don't expect too much scenic views on your way to Thessaloniki.
It may take you 10 hours to drive, but it only take 4 hours (intercity) to 5.5 hours (regular) by train. I guess your children will appreciate if you take the train.
