Just back from Iceland 8 days without my suitcase !!!!!!!!!! Delta had it in Baltimore and would not turn it over to Icelandaire. My "case" was waiting for me at the Delta claim when I arrived in Detroit.
Oh, now that stinks! I went through Baltimore, and mine was checked through no problem. I had planned to pick it up in Baltimore, and recheck in; but NW? was able to check it through.
Sorry to hear that. I hope you still enjoyed Iceland though!
As a writer of human interest stories, also a very young, adventurous, 70 year old granny, intrigued by destinations off the beaten path, with Iceland at the top of my list, followed by the Galapogos. Considering a trip to Iceland, perhaps alone. Which time of year is the best to go ?? Any and all comments welcomed.
Sigwen2002 - I think September was a great time to be in Iceland. There was about 12 hours of daylight, so plenty of time to do things. The weather was decent. And because it was shoulder season, it was also more economical. But then when you travel alone, it is always a little more economical for indidentals like food. The only thing with September, is some of the glacier passages were closed, the glacier lake boat trip was no longer available, etc. But a little time and research will help you work the most into your trip.
I also highly recommend the Galapagos. First recommendation: go on a small yacht trip, and not the cruise ships. You will see 10x more, but still the pace is reasonable and adjustable. As for when to go, it is a much more complex answer. I have friends that went in Spring, while I went in the fall. The water temperature was 10 deg C different, and colder for us. In one season it is green and lush, but difficult to see the tortoises; in another season brown and matted but can see tortoises easier. Again, a little research. I thought our trip in November was perfect - warm days, breezy evenings. But a wet suit would have made the snorkling a little more comfortable. FYI - you don't need to be able to dive, but you want to be experienced at snorkling. Snorkling with the penguins is one of the most exciting moments of my life.
