As a local from the north east Georgia area, I really have a hard time grasping the appeal of this place. Whenever I meet a person not familiar with the state of Georgia, they always know at least two locations here - Atlanta (of course) and Helen? Our lovely state has so much more to offer than this fake German tourist trap. If you plan on indulging in an adult beverage at one of the many local watering holes, beware of the city of Helen police. The fines are outrageous. A friend of mine was fined $1000 for a public drunk charge. Another person I know got a DUI when he drove his car less than 100 feet from the bar to his hotel. They love to take tourists money at all the shops, but they REALLY get off on collecting fines so be careful.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who isn't impressed with Helen! And that is great advice, I will keep that in mind if I go back to Helen (although it isn't very likely).

I live in White County and I'll go up to Helen to have a few drinks with friends on the occasional Saturday night. Like Katy said, the place is only good for a half day or so. The whole "family atmosphere" is bogus in my opinion. One good thing about Helen is Big Daddy's. They have awesome wings and a great beer selection. Although, at times, their wings aren't as good as previous trips. I guess it depends who is working the kitchen.

I'm planning on a trip to Helen with my sister and mom, I have not been to Helen ,but from your comments i'm beinning to worry if this place is worth the trip. I heard that in October was the best time to go.Please comment and let me know what we should do. Thanks

Any views on the Octoberfest? I wanted to go to Helen with a friend who once lived in Germany, but the reviews here are discouraging.

I took my family last week the scenery was beautiful. We got into town Friday afternoon and checked into our cabin (pricey but beautiful) then went into town to look around.I enjoyed its flea market vibe, but we came back Saturday and the place was packed, traffic was backed up about 2 miles out of town. And I got the impression that the main focus was on the pubs (not good with teenagers & small kids). If you want to take pictures of the scenery you would be better off going during the week or off season, people drive like their at the races. But it was a beautiful place and I really did enjoy it. Some of the best places were not in Helen:Nora Mills,Anna Ruby Falls, Unicoi State Park,the place has alot to offer I would recommend it.

Candace - I've never been to Helen during Octoberfest, but I have heard it is a fun time to be in the city. From what my friends have told me, it sounds like a good time! Sorry I can't be of more help.

Dawn, sorry we are worrying you about Helen! I do believe that Helen is worth the trip at least once. It's good to experience it and say you've been, and as I said above it's supposed to be a pretty fun place in October (but probably not very family-friendly). I went during the summer and on a weekend so it was the peak of tourist season, which influenced my negative review. There will probably still be a lot of people there in October for the festival... but the weather is nice this time of year and the leaves are changing, so I expect you'll have a better time than I did. If you do decide to go, please post a trip review - I love to see what other people think about Helen! And if you decide not to go and want to go somewhere else, I always tell people to go to Savannah as it's one of my favorite cities in the country.
