We left Auckland on Friday night 13 July and arrived in San Fran at noon on Friday 13 July.... Caught train from airport to Montgomery Station - 10 minute walk from Hotel Astoria, right next to entrance to China Town.
Jumped onto cable car down Powell and Hyde Street to fisherman's wharf.
Strolled along Embarcadero while for rolled in and hid the golden Gate Bridge from View. Bloody cold in the wind!! in the eveing set out to find "Le Colonial" in Cosmo Place and just when we were about to give up and turn back there it was! Drank lots of Heineken, ate some nice vietnamese food, listened to jazz and watched the locals. Cool place to hang out for the first night, funny we were there the same time when we left NZ, 7.30 pm on Friday night.... Nightcap, jukebox and Marlboros on the way home in a little dive of a bar. Saw lots of homeless people. Most of them ask you for money. Hotel staff recommended we didn't venture out into Tenderloin, but didn't think it was too dodgy...
Organised guided tour for tomorrow and hit the sack. Hotel room's got a funny smell, and it's a bit tired but comfortable enough and cheap. Apparently it was 68 F today, only 20 C! That's pretty much what we left behind in NZ!
