We are moving from Santa Monica to NY and are finally taking the cross country road trip we have wanted to take since meeting in college. Some of the highlights are a Vegas kick-off, hiking in Utah, Jazzfest in New Orleans, and Nascar Talladega!

Day 1 - Las Vegas

After days (weeks?) of goodbyes, we finally got our car packed at around 3pm on Saturday.  We took a quick drive down to the ocean to say a final goodbye to the beach. We then grabbed sandwiches at Bay Cities Deli, our favorite sandwich place in Santa Monica, and started our trip west to Las Vegas. The first 30 miles took about 1 hour 40 minutes. The remaining 240 miles only took about 3 hours (had to make up some time).  We checked into Mandalay Bay at around 8pm, and caught a nice break. They had run out of regular rooms, and upgraded us to a Penthouse Suite. We had far more room than we new what to do with: Dining Room, Bar, Office, Living Room, 2 40+ inch plasma televisions, and an enormous bathroom with a built in steam shower - we'll post pictures later.

From there, I met up with several friends for a bachelor party at Caesar's (Pure), and Laura met up with her friend Sharon at a club called Taboo at MGM.  We met up a bit later, then I played poker for a while and crashed pretty late.

Since they started in Santa Monica (west), Las Vegas is north and east. good thing they didn't get lost on the trip. Good report, though.

You completely missed a fantastic place near Amarillo--Palo Duro Canyon State Park. It's really something to see. (The only reason it's not a national park is due to Texas politics, interestingly. It recently also added thousands of acres.)

Sounds like you both had an awesome time, I've been to Utah and its the most beautiful state I have ever seen. Twenty days for a trip is awesome. Must have cost a fortune.
