Tulum(sometimes called Tuluum) is the site of a Pre-Columbian, Mayan walled city serving as a major port for Cobá . The ruins are located on the east coast of the Yucatán peninsula on the Gulf of Mexico in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico.
The Maya site may have been formerly also known by the name Zama, or the city of Dawn. Tulum is also the Mayan word for fence, trench or wall and the walls surrounding the site allowed Tulum fort to serve as a defense against an invasion. From the numerous depictions in murals and other works around the site, Tulum appears to have been an important site for the worship of the Descending God.
We celebrate New Year's in Caye Caulker!
This is the acclaimed “Cave of the Crystal Maiden,” featured in National Geographic Magazine and quickly becoming Belize’s most popular underground experience. This cave is for fit and active people who do not mind getting wet and muddy—and who are able to tread lightly! After the initial 45-minute hike to the entrance (with three river fords) and a swim into the cave’s innards, you will be asked to remove your shoes upon climbing up the limestone into the main cathedral-like chambers.
The rooms are littered with delicate Maya pottery and the crystallized remains of 14 humans. There are no pathways, fences, glass, or other partitions separating the visitor from the artifacts. Nor are there any installed lights. The only infrastructure is a rickety ladder leading up to the chamber of the Crystal Maiden herself, a full female skeleton that sparkles with calcite under your headlamp’s glare, more-so during the drier months
We embark on our 36-mile trek into the thick jungle of the Peten region, spending 3 nights camping near little-visited Mayan ruins. On day 10 we arrive at Tikal and spend the 3rd night in the National Park, watching the sunset over the ruins from the top of one of the pyramids.
Time to explore Tikal, perhaps the most impressive of all the Mayan sites and set amidst imposing jungle that echoes to the calls of monkeys and exotic birds. We return to Flores in the afternoon.
