Day one!!

And away we go!    The East Coast!    DC - New York -  Jamestown - Niagara Falls

We've decided to fly instead of drive the airfare was cheaper.

This is our family vacation. It seems we do a big vacation every other year.Image
Last time we did Colorado Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Mount Rushmore and all the points in between from California. 13 days in a tent trailer and 4,000 miles.

We want a great vacation with lots of memories at a fair price.

I booked the flights over 3 months in advance. ($99 each way)
With a little research I found a  very inexpensive luxury car rental that was ony $280 for the 15 days from Budget.  (AAA and an upgrade.) You really have to ask for the upgrades.

We are staying in KOA Kamping Kabins 10 of the 17 days averaging about $70 a night with 7 nights in hotels as we wander around.

This is a Kamping Kabin in San Diego. It sleeps 4.

Since we are kinda camping we need to bring a few things in our suitcase,  like linens or sleeping bags. We are also bringing  a small Colmen stove that folds in half. My son's backpacking tea kettle and a small  griddle.

This should be a Fun Adventure!

Okay, we are in Ontario at the BestWestern near the airport. It's been refurbished and is very nice. We stay one night here and the car stays free for the entire trip. In the morning there's breakfast at 6am but we need to catch the free shuttle to the Airport at 5:30am. Oh Well!

Kids are in the pool. It's 9pm and 80-degrees out here.

Talk about this trip (7)
just wondering where and when did you purchase the tickets to see Hairspray? Is is suitable for kids ages 5-9yrs old?

I purchased them about 3 weeks before we left thru Ticketmaster then printed the tickets at home (good Seats too). If you have your heart set on good seats and seeing something specific purchase earlier. Yes, it is just fine. No bad language just some adult humor and jokes that a 5 & 9 year old might or might not get. I saw 9 and 10 year olds, but I don't remember seeing anyone younger. It's not Disney. Rate it PG. The musical numbers make the show, they are fantasic. Great Broaway play, horrible movie.

i saw the photos of Niagra falls and others of New York City and these all are very much fascinating and charming. The dome of Presidential Palace in Washington D.C. is also very fine. I think there is one gig library in Washington D.C. where many things in archives are placed for the general public, which are of common interest to all. Thanks.

It is really great plesure to see the world, but it is also difficult to see the world. There are nummerous places in the world and the list is endless. Even then as far as possile one should see maximum places one can and share pictures on computer. But remember there is one thing, "Place and palaces you may roam, be it known there is no place like home. Thanks.

How did you plan all these tours and stop overs? Did you use a guide service? and about how much did the total trip cost from start to finish?

Planning the trip. Well about 1/2 the trip was plan. In January I asked the kids what they wanted to see, printed few points of interest from each place and from there I just tried to fit it all in. The Plane fare and the car was arranged 3 months ahead to take advantage of very low rates.

Then out came the map and a highlighter. I circled the points of interest and tried to make a route. (the route change a lot even during the trip. There was so many fantastic little side trip everyday) I used the KOA camping guide to schedule and reserve some overnights in cabins. Some of the KOA's the have tours. A great way to go.

Before we left home I downloaded the DC and NY train schedules and we would ALL try to figure it out while driving (after all, we are from California what's mass transportation? We had no clue. But that was half the fun and the DC transit people were so helpful.)

Then I planned for a couple of just drive days (500 miles-8 hours) to make up for the 2 or 3 days in 1 place. Other than that we just drove around. About every 3-4 day we had a place to be with a place to sleep. That kept us on schedule

We just wanted to have a good time, see the sites, and enjoy the family. We didn't plan everything so we just had to roll with the punches good or BAD. It was a totally none stressful, fun vacation for us. Nearly a year later we still talk about the trip. The kids constantly use information from the trip in school reports. It was a great vacation!
Total cost 17 days-4 people- food -tours - souvenirs -transportation- fuel- everything $5,000

I had to laugh at the KOA stop in New york. You never know when you will have the most memorable time.
