Jo and my first stop was to New York , New York . New York City was only 82.11 miles from Wintergreen school, so we didn’t need to stop on the way there. We took off in our Honda Insight at 8:30 am and arrived in New York at 10:18 am. We stopped off at our hotel the Millennium, and rested there till 11:00. Then we went shopping!
Our first stop was the giant Toys “R” Us in Times Square . We left our car at the hotel since it was easier to walk through the city. Jo said that she only came to New York City for premiers and books singings and was trilled to actually get to see the real city. As we stepped in side the store Jo gasped at the actual Ferris wheel inside the store, “I’ve never seen anything like it before” she said. We went on the Ferris wheel once for $20.00. There were some really cool displays; I liked the Barbie house the best while Jo liked the Harry Potter display. We stayed at Toys “R” Us till 1:00 then we went to Little Italy for lunch.
Jo got a calzone, for lunch, and I got spaghetti. For desert we each got a cannoli. Jo and I then headed to the Empire State Building . Jo was even more impressed by this building then Toys “R” Us. “The Empire State Building was built during the great depression. It was built for a contest between two people to see who could build the tallest building. Four and a half floors where built a week and it started being built on March 17, 1930.” Droned the tour guide had droned but Joe seemed entranced, and listened to every word. Finally we reached the observatory and it took my breath away. You could see the whole world from up here, it seamed. We hugged our jackets close as the cold wind blew. Since we were up at such a height altitude the wind was stronger, and became a lot chiller. We stayed at the Empire State Building for 2 hours, and each of our tickets cost $18.00.
It had been a long say so Jo and I decided to back to our hotel. On the way there we bought some honey roasted peanuts and two large salted pretzels (which came out of our daily $150.00 for food and lodging). We discussed the adventure filled day. “I liked eating lunch in Little Italy the best because it was like a whole different world compared Times Square .” Jo said “Well I liked the Empire State Building the best because it felt like I was on top of the world.” I said. Then we looked at all the pictures we took on our digital camera. We decided to get some rest for our next stop to Washington D.C. so we went to sleep at 8:30 and that was our wonderful day in the Big Apple!
Jo and I went to Washington D.C. ! We had a lot of fun and visited many intriguing places. We drove straight from New York , New York to Washington D.C. in one day, it was only 174.82 miles there, and took about three hours. We listened to Christmas songs on the radio all the way there.
Jo was very exited to to see the J.F.K. center so we went there first. We got a free tour and went to the gift store. At the gift store I bought a blue guitar tie for $30 (for Mr. Ridgway) and a Nutcracker Book CD for myself, it cost $15. Jo bought a Kennedy Center bag for $30. “My favorite part was the west roof trance because you could see the beautiful river and feel like your soaring. It was brilliant!”
We were practically famished by then and decided to go to the Hard Rock Café. We had just sat down to eat when we saw Alicia with Marilyn M. unfortunately we only got to talk for a little bit because they were off to more sight seeing and our food had just arrived, it would be nice to see them again in San Francisco. We ate then moved on to our next destination, Ford’s theater. It had self guided tours and was free. It was an eerie felling knowing that a great president had been shot there.
After Ford’s theater we checked out the monuments! The first monument we went to was the Washington Monument , then the Jefferson Memorial, and the Lincoln Memorial. At the Washington Monument we found a cool post card and we also found a really spectacular Harry Potter stamp with Hedwig on it. We wanted to visit the white house but we need to have gotten permission from our member of congress.
We were very tired and decided that we should go to our hotel. We stayed at the Omni Shoreham Hotel. The hotel was really pretty and it was a shame we couldn’t go into the pool because it was so cold. We talked about our road trip so far. Jo loved the Kennedy center while I said that Times Square , from yesterday, was the best part. We also planned out our next stop, Los Vegas! We figure it will take about four days till we can get to Los Vegas, because of the 600 miles per day rule. Can’t wait till Jo and I get there!
