The hotel was I believe $70 for the 1 night. All the attractions and memorials are free. The Trolley I believe was $30 for the day and you can get on and off all the stops til 5pm. So overall, with food, parking, hotel, sightseeing and gifts, around $150 to $200 for the 2 days.

I lived in DC for 10yrs. It is a very walk friendly town especially if you are touring "the mall". I was surprised they didn't just walk to the capitol from union station. Also surprised they found a parking space in front of the museum. Good for them but, be mindful, this was a rare occurance. Also, some of the parking signs can be very confusing. Read carefully.
There is a book describing 100 things to see/do/visit for free in DC. The hotels are usually the highest price but one can opt to be in a suburb and ride the metro in to the district.

I stayed at a Super 8 on New York Ave, it's about 5 minutes from the White House and only about $70 for a night. Not a great hotel, but good enough to crash for the night. You can catch the Old Town Sight Seeing Trolley tour bus at Union Station. It's about $30 for the whole day and you can get on and off at about 12 different stops.
