A trip from December 28, 2006 to January 15, 2007, travelling to San Francisco, Khlong San Khwaeng, Dusit …
Ok so this is a trip to ride elephants and go shopping … More
Ok so this is a trip to ride elephants and go shopping not a trip to shop for elephants:)
My daughter AKA Twinkle Bug has always loved elephants and shopping so this trip will cover both along with seeing Thailand for the first time.
The photos shown are just stock pictures from the hotels along our route. I will update this page with some of our own photos and keep a journal along the way.

Any ideas on the best place to stay in Chiang Mai? I have listed the Sheraton but since I am staying at Marriott's (lots of points) the rest of the trip I would like something less western for at least some of this trip.
Thanks for any advice you might have!

We did this same trip in April with our three kids. It was a trip of a lifetime for all of us! The Thai people could not have been better hosts and because of the strength of the dollar, the price was the same as it would have been if we had gone to Hawaii.

In Bangkok, you really cannot see enough of the temples. At the palace you will see the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, and of course you will see the reclining Buddha. But I also recommend Wat Traimitr (Golden Buddha) and there is also a "Temple of the Many Buddhas" but I do not know it's exact name. It seems like there are at least 50 Buddha statues there, very cool. The emaciated Buddha is really skinny, I mean really....

You've got to go to the Floating Market. That's cool.

The best cocktails in all of Thailand can be found at the Oriental Hotel. Trust the bartenders, ask for something special. You will be rewarded.

As you travel north, see if you cannot stop at the Bridge over the River Qwai. That's a cool little village and museum. Although, it helps to suffer through the movie of the same name so that you'll understand the context of what you're seeing.

Otherwise, you have a great itin and you're going to love every minute of this trip. Best place to visit on Earth, I say.

Is there someone who knows if the overnight train ride from Bangkok to Chiang Mai is a good option? Is flying better?

Twinkle Bug!
I am also getting pretty stoked about the trip. Just sent an e-mail to a guide in Mae Hong Son and will be getting the exact details of our Elephant/Rafting Trek to the Lisu village. Got out tickets from Chiang Mai to Mae Hong Son and our hotel reservations at the D2 in Chiang Mai. All reservations are now complete and all we have to do is go:)
When you get to Reno we can go shopping for stuff we need...bug spray is tops on the list becasue we will be by the Burma border.
I got the cameras and am breaking in the new video camera today. Can't wait to see you at X-mas! Mele Kalikimaka
Love you
