Day 1:

Arrival
We arrived in Chicago at at 1:45pm- earlier than scheduled.  We then met up with Stephanie's friend Mina who attends the School of the Art Institude of Chicago, who we were staying with in Chicago.   She lives right off the red line at the Belmont stop. We got a seven day pass to ride the el and rode  to her place and dropped our stuff off.  It was easier than I thought to ride the el except for the fact that I had to carry both the suitcases when we hit stairs two times.  The weather in Chicago was not perfect the first day, in fact it was very cloudy.  But we were excited to see downtown looming in the distance.

DuckwalkImage
We went to a Thai restaurant called Duckwalk, right by the Belmont stop. It's one of Mina's favorites and we like it too.  We ordered Crab Rangoon for an appetizer.  They were very good with crab meat, cream cheese type mixture inside of a crispy wanton.  For our meals I ordered the Thai Green Curry which happens to be one of my favorites.  I love curry and could order it everytime.  It was a little spicy but you can have them adjust the heat.  The flavor was very good.  Steph ordered the Thai Red Curry which is a little sweeter but also very delicious.  I would recommend Duckwalk to anyone, especially if you are in the area.
We then attempted to hurry downtown to make our Arictecture River boat tour, but were too late.   The weather was not the best so I was kind of glad that we missed the river cruise.  But since we were downtown we decided to stroll down Magnificent Mile and take a look at some of what Chicago had to offer.  We stopped by Millenium Park.  As the weather got worse and it started to drizzle we decided to head back to Mina's for the day.

Le Creperie
Image         We decided to have dinner at Le Creperie  located at 2845 North Clark Street Chicago, Illinois 60657.  It is also one of Mina's favorite restraunts in the area.
The crepes were wonderful and we ate there late and there was still a crowd seems very popular with the locals.  We ordered a curry crepe and a banana's fosters type crepe called Bananas Sara with vanilla icecream.  Both were very good and the waitstaff was also very friendly.  If you like crepes I would recommend this restraunt if not I would try another place because although they have other options they specialize in crepes.

That is a great time to go and I am sure you and your family will have a great time again. The best pizza in Chicago is hard to say I have only had Uno's but I have heard that Lou Malnati's and Giordano's are better. I would try one of those first or check citysearch or some other sites that review restaurants to get an idea what the locals like before you go.

I loved your trip! We will be revisiting Chicago this April. Our children loved the field museums evolution planet, they were able to run around like monkeys. Hopefully now they are older they will appreciate the shedds aquarium. And this trip we would like to revisit field museum, and shedds. And also add Navy Pier, Lincoln park zoo, museum of science and industry, and last but not least (according to our daughter) American girl. I would like to know who has the best Chicago style pizza?!? Thanks for any tips, hope your next trip is just as wonderful! Lela

If you ever make it back to Hot Doug's, be sure to order the Paul Kelly -- the bratwurst -- as much as possible. Not only is it delicious, but 25 cents of each purchase goes to a very worthy cause. thankyouverymuch, OldCleat

Hi, I'm hauling my family of 6 from Florida to
Chicago for a week after Christmas-your itinerary is the best I've read so far. Thanks for putting it up.

As a native Chicagoan now living in Houston 10 years, I enjoyed the story of your trip. I especially enjoyed the fact you used the public transportation ( which I sorely miss in Houston) and read how you got to the various parts of town.

I think if you move there and you are in your 20's you should really enjoy it and be able to deal with the cold weather. You may miss the sunshine you have come to know in Houston and Austin because it is not as sunny as often in Chicago. I smiled when you said on your first day the weather was not that great. If you move there that will be the hardest adjustment coming from Houston.

Anyway, great recounting of your trip ..thanks.
