Dec 27th:
After finally enduring our last flight leg of the day, we catch the shuttle into town and check in at Backpacker's Downtown Lodge (what a dump). That's what we get for booking a hostel online. Ah well...the Internet and breakfast are free and the whole point of a vacation is to avoid spending time in the room anyway, right?
We begin exploring the town, drawn inexorably toward the harbor. The views across Lake Wakatipu are spectacular...but the wind blowing in off the water is chilly. Luckily, we packed for cooler weather.
Dinner is at Wai Restaurant and Wine Bar. The oyster platter and tuna are great. Not so much with the salmon dish. This is (hopefully) the most expensive meal we'll have in New Zealand.
After dinner, we walk thru the nearby Queenstown Gardens, located on a finger reaching out into the lake. Mel snaps some great shots of the lake as we amble along the dirt path circling the gardens and bordering the lakeshore.
We wander into the Surreal restaurant and bar for drinks and dessert. The lemon cheesecake is great but the same can't be said for the passion fruit-drenched chocolate cake (dry when it isn't drowned by the sauce).
Swinging by an all-night grocery store, we buy water & food for tomorrow's early morning hike.

I hope we´ll enjoy NZ as much as you have done.
We're thinking that the next time we go back, we might try a bicycle tour. There are definitely a few places we'd like to backpack, though. Good luck on getting there in March!
