Day 1: On the Waterfront
The waterfront Argonaut hotel is located right by Fisherman's Wharf. Your tour of San Francisco starts at Pier 39 where there's plenty to see and do. Catch a glimpse of the famous seals and sea lions, snag a few souvenirs at the shops, and most importantly, order a delicious Dungeness crab for lunch.
From Pier 39, catching a ferry to Alcatraz is a snap; ferries leave roughly every half hour, with extended hours during the summer months. The former maximum security prison is now one of San Francisco's top tourist attractions, and has been featured in countless movies including The Rock and Escape From Alcatraz.
When you return from your visit to "the Rock," warm up with a comforting cup of hot chocolate at nearby Ghirardelli Square.
In the evening, stroll through neighboring North Beach and grab dinner at one of the many Italian restaurants--Steps of Rome and The Stinking Rose are two popular picks. After dinner, stop by City Lights bookstore, the birthplace of beat poetry.
