Stayed at Hotel Lanai for $135. Old style, single wall wood structure, a little noisy but pleasant and folks are very nice. Lanai City is compact, neat, laid back and friendly. Norfolk pines everywhere and at 1700 feet, relatively cool. If you eat in the little restraunts you can get by nicely without a huge outlay, but all the resort dining rooms have the four seasons price tag. Excellent however. I had the duck at Henry Clay's which was amazing.

When we landed in Lanai, we were greeted by a dude named Clive who drove us to Hotel Lanai - he's a great source of information and a really nice guy by the way. When we departed, Clive was checking tickets ahead of the TSA checkpoint, obviously working a couple of jobs. Then when we boarded our plane, there he was loading bags into the cargo compartment! It wouldn't have been a stretch to see him put on the hat, to pilot our plane back to Oahu.

We didn't rent a car which worked out fine. Shuttle service to the airport and between the resorts at KoEle, Manele Bay and Hotel Lanai was excellent and runs like clockwork. To get a real sense of the lay of the land, rent a 4WD vehicle. I wouldnt need a car next around either.
