Day 1- Bye Bye Fresno HELLO CAMBRIA!!

We left a bit later than we had planned.   Note to anyone driving from Fresno to the Central Coast  in June- all cars MUST have air conditioning!  Boy was it hot.

The grapevine in Paso Robles Wine area were beautiful!  In another month or so they will have those mylar strips to keep the birds off and the vines will sparkle in the wind.

We didn't book our campsite in advance.  When we arrived the ranger lady said that we could have a site for the first night but we'd have to check back the next morning for Saturday night and we may not be in the same site.  The first site we were given was just what Scott wanted (by the creek) but since we now bought the biggest tent in the world it didn't fit.  We ended up in a sight we'd stayed in before in the upper level of the campgrounds.

After setting up camp we were so sticky from the car ride we took showers.  No frongs in the showers this time. :-)  We were a bit tired from the drive so we decided to walk about in town and buy our lottery tickets (we always play when we are in Cambria).

We decided to have dinner in town instead of just a snack.  We ate at Main Street Grill.  Scott had fish and chips and I had a hot dog and onion rings with ranch.

We went to Moonstone Beach Drive to watch the sun set to find that our bench was gone and the shore was foggy.  The sun and fog gave me a headache.  We sat in our car for a while playing with Scott's new binoculars and watching pellicans fly by and an otter swimming.  Our cat Teeter looks like an otter sometimes.  The both lay on their backs showin' the belly.

Before we went back to camp we decided to drive to where the Ranch Trails are.  We ended up finding a new bench off the bluff trail and sat there a while as it got dark.  It was so pretty, so many flowers!  And the bench was off trail a bit so a bit more private, much more private than our old bench.

When we got back to camp we realized that Scott didn't put the bags of dry food in the van.  We had no hot chocolate or dessert stuff.  We drove to a mini mart in San Simeon- No hot chocolate and the Cookie Crock Market in Cambria closes at 9:00.

We went back to camp and talked by the fire.

Talk about this trip (5)
I lived in Cambria for about 6 years. It is one of my favorite places. Very mystical and unique. Worth a trip to Cambia and stay a week to fully appreciate all it has to offer. Everyone I refer Cambria to are delighted when they take the trip. Most people do not know where Cambria, CA is.
It is a best kept secret. Great places to stay, food and wine.

Just got back from a long weekend in Cambria- loved every minute of it. Of course we went to the Hearst castle, and enjoyed that... but we also really enjoyed Nitwit Ridge. What a quirky and fun place to visit- can't imagine putting together the whole house with junk from the garbages. A must see in my book.
Also we went over to San Luis Obispo on Thursday night for the Farmer's market- What a great time we had. We bought all kinds of fresh fruits and veggies and the BBQ was to die for. If you are in the area on Thursday it is also a must attend. The sunsets were gorgous and the town was quaint and friendly. Picked up moonstones on moonstone beach! It was my first time there but it cetrianly will not be my last.

I really enjoyed reading about your trip. Wow, I would love to find a moonstone. When we visited Cambria earlier this summer, it was the first I had heard of them. Everyone in town had a different story to tell and none of them coincided. We searched and searched, but no luck. We are back home now, but I still wonder, where were they? Were and what times did you find them?
Thanks, Julie

I always find my moonstones while walking on Moonstone Beach. They are the litte white stones (when polished they are more translucent). There is also beach jade to hunt for too. Little green stones. At the bead shop in the West Village she has moonstone and beach jade beads. I made a bracelet with then last Novemember.
Happy Beach Combing!

If you want peace and quite spend some time here. Anyone know how to get a tour for the lighthouses in the area? Linn's rest at the villege is great but their farm was a disappointment. Nice drive but no tour just a small shop with items you can pick up in town. if you really want to drive drive up Hwy 1 and take a picture of this country's highest priced gas up the road.
