Durango Silverton NarrowgaugeRailroad

Enjoyed full day on the Durango and Silverton Narrowgauge Railroad  today.  The train leaves at 9:00 and gets back at 6:00.  A really fun way to spend the day with the family. The train trip is fun for all ages, with breathtaking scenery.  The train drops you off for several hours in Silverton in the afternoon (We ate at the Bent Elbow which had an old-fashion piano player, was kid-friendly, and had big portions.). Lunch and shopping seems to be the drill.

Get a reservation for a car in the back, less smoke and cinders. There is a more open-air car, but like Amtrak, first come-first serve.  There is also a first class (no kids).

Overall the railroad was a really great trip, and I would do it again.

Monday:

Today we hung around downtown during the day.  The highlight of the day was the Bartels' Mancos Valley Stage Line  - a nice 45 minute drive from Durango to Mancos, for a 3 hour stagecoach ride, history lesson, and awesome dinner.  My kids enjoyed this more than the train... real horses, riding "shotgun" on top of the coach, more horses, a great dinner, bows and arrows to shoot, etc.

Tip:  do the dinner cruise.  Order the steak.  Enjoy the history.
