National Park Whirlwind Tour

A trip from August 04, 2006 to August 20, 2006
Grand tour of the west starting in Las Vegas and visiting … More
Grand tour of the west starting in Las Vegas and visiting the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Canyonlands, Arches, Capitol Reef, Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Bozeman Montana, Crater Lake, Redwoods, Yosemite, and Death Valley. Seems exhausting but it honestly never seemed that way. We rented a convertible and took alot of back roads, mixing camping with hotels and relatives. 4200 mile total trip in 17 days. 2000 plus pictures, probably cost 1500$ total.

4200 miles in 18 days may seem like a lot but it never was a bother. Just rent a convertible and cruise the backroads and the drive is part of the fun...just be willing to stop a lot to take in the view.

In late July first of August family and I made a 4690 mile journey from Houston Texas to Yellowstone National Park and back in 11 days. It was wonderfull, the driveing was hard and long but the views were well worth it

You're spending more time in the car than you are in the parks. Come on! Do you think you can really get to know Crater Lake or Yosemite in a day? No way! To quote Edward Abbey, "A man on foot, on horseback or on a bicycle will see more, feel more, enjoy more in one mile than the motorized tourists can in a hundred miles. Better to idle through one park in two weeks than try to race through a dozen in the same amount of time."

Pick a park. Go there. Live there. Be there.

Why bother? Spend an hour for each park watching the Travle Channel documentaries.
If you are truly fortunate enough to visit any of these parks, spend the time to get to know what's there. A weekin Arches, or a lifetime at Yellowstone. Even that's not enough.

tend to agree with the previous comments above. too much car and way too little park!! park the car pull on a good pair of day-hikers and get out on the trails!! then you'll "see" thepark!

I think that they probably got a great overview and can go back and focus on what they really would be interested in. Making reservations at times can be difficult, It would be nice to know in advance what to focus your energy on and plan longer more indepth trips knowing ahead of time where best suits your needs. At least they did it! So many of us only wish we could.

take eight weeks to take the trip and enjoy it.

You missed Zion and Brice Canyons. These are a must.

We spend a week camping out at Olympic National Park and barely scratched the surface of what there is to see and do there. The worst part was the driving from place to place; much better was the camping and hiking!

Not everyone has eight weeks of time or eight weeks of money. I'd rather spend a few days at each than spend all my time at one place. How many views can you actually see of the Grand Canyon before they all start to look alike?
