Taking off!

Since we live near Atlanta, my husband and I drove to Savannah.  It’s about a 4.5 hr. trip along a somewhat pretty highway.  The scenery on the highway does not prepare you for the beautiful scenes in Savannah though!

We Are There.
When we first entered Savannah, we passed construction and later learned there used to be a parking lot in that spot.  Originally, this spot was one of the first four squares of Savannah which they are now restoring--don't know whose idea it was to put a parking lot on top of a square, but thank goodness for the historical society!   The parking lot will still be there, but it will be underground—very smart. (for Savannah facts check out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Savannah,_Georgia )

ImageIt was easy to find our hotel.  We selected the East Bay Inn because of the AAA package discount and because it’s right on Bay Street which is one of the main streets running parallel to the river in the Historic District.  My husband and I were pleased to see what a beautiful and pedestrian-friendly city Savannah is!  (Parking can be a little hard to find - so plan on lots of walking.) Everything in Savannah is so well laid out. The park-like squares are just beautiful and a wonderful addition to the city.

Before we checked in, we went for a quick walk outside to an area east of the hotel. We later found out it is one of the oldest areas of the city.  The majority of homes in this part of town are made of wood.  It turns out that there was a fire years ago, and the wood homes on the west side of the city were badly burned.  Subsequent homes in the western part of the city were made of stone and brick while those to the east are still wood.

ImageThe staff at the hotel were all very considerate and helpful.  We mentioned to the desk clerk that we were here for our anniversary, and they gave us corner room.  The room was beautiful.

Dinner First Night.
At 5:00pm, we went to The Boar's Head Grill right on River Street.  That's a little early for dinner, but we wanted to have enough time to make a walking tour.  No lines in the restaurant.  The staff wasn't too friendly, but the food was excellent.

Ghost Talk Ghost Walk.
At 7:15pm, we went to Reynold Square to meet the Ghost Talk Ghost Walk tour.  We were pleased to learn that this was not going to be one of those ghost tours where people, dressed as ghouls jump out of the bushes to scare the tourists.  Our tour guide, Christina was very knowledgeable of the history of the area and the ghosts, of course.  We were told that Savannah is one of the most "haunted" cities in America.  Oooo....

Tours during the week last one hour.  They take you all through the Historic district and tell you about the ghosts that haunt each area. On Saturday and Sunday you get an extra half-hour to tour the Juliette Gordon Low House.  It was interesting to see one of the homes after hours - different feeling from a daytime visit.

Talk about this trip (10)
We actually stayed in a Vacation rental as opposed to a hotel. We are a family of 6 and din`t want to get 2 rooms plus we wanted to cook some of our own meals. We looked at quite a few , but finally found one here http://www.savannahdreamvacations.com/va… . We loved it, the home was right on the park, which we walked arround every morning. There is a healthfood store and coffee shop right there and it had private parking which was awesome. We walked arround everywhere and the city really is spectacular. We also spent a day on and went on a canoe tour. We`re already planning to come back, and want to do some of the house tours next time.
