Day 1-Flight to Juneau and Gustavus/Glacier Bay

Image   Our trip began in Bellingham, WA with a flight on Alaska Airlines to Seattle ,Seattle to Juneau, AK and then on to Gustavus, AK with a shuttle ride to Glacier Bay Lodge. Part of the package with the lodge included dinner at the lodge resturant, which did not complement the spectacular scienery of Glacier Bay.

After the disapointing dinner, we took a hike along the rocky shore and then through the forest trail back to the lodge. We saw a couple of Oyster Chatchers, and some beautiful wildflowers, Chocolate Lillies, along the hike. After returning to the lodge we attended the National Park Ranger talk in the up-stairs ampltheater.

We returned to our room around 10:30pm to get some sleep for the next day. Being the first day of summer, it was still light outside at this time even though it was a cloudy and misty.

Talk about this trip (4)
Hoping to visit Alaska this summer for the first time. Everything looks & sounds so beautiful. We do not want to cruise (fear of motion sickness). Anyway, we want to see as much as possible in about 12 days. Would like to include wildlife, national parks, ice glaciers, some light hiking, train ride/tours, what else...what else? Probably plan for July or Aug timeframe. Love to photograph and good eating, relaxing and just taking in all of God's beauty. WHERE/what areas can we find all this? Thanks for your suggestions.

I suggest to go to Denali and train to Fairbanks or train Anchorage Seward. Seward is a great fishing town and home of some humpbacks. Going to Alaska and not taking the train or not going to Talkeetna or Denali would be a waste. Unless you have a month it is hard to do in a short trip.

Kimnelle,
Just finished reading your review and I liked it very much. I'm in the planning stage of a trip to anchorage. Fly in and rent a van or small RV while staying at campsites and doing some exploring down to Homer then back to Anchorage and fly home. After reading your trip review I'm now thinking to fly into anchorage, rent a car and drive down to a port for the ferry to Juneau then fly home. Either way enjoyed your review very much.
