And we're off!
Pre-travel preparations
Two of my college friends emailed me about joining them for vacation this summer (we'll call them the 2 C's - C1 & C2). What I thought was going to be a beach vacation in the Caribbean ended up being one of the best vacations of my life hiking up a mountain in Peru. And for that, I thank them for their invitation.
When we decided on Macchu Picchu, I started by booking my air ticket on www.farechase.com where I found a ticket that was at least $200 cheaper than any other site I checked. (It was $1000 btw from San Francisco roundtrip.)
It is important to note the things I brought before I left for Peru. I'm not much of a hiker normally, in fact this was my first ever serious hike (4 days / 3 nights). The night before I made a mad rush to REI to purchase (thankfully) a warm fleece, hiking socks with medium cushioning, thermal underwear, a rain shell, Nalgene bottle, and hiking pants. I also completed my last minute prep by borrowing a large internal frame pack, a 15 degree sleeping bag, and some hiking boots from friends. I do not know if I would have survived without these things especially the sleeping bag, sweat wicking shirt and hiking pants. I brought $150 in cash and a credit card although in hindsight I should have brought more cash and/or my ATM card.
I flew out from San Francisco to LA where I had a direct flight to Lima. We landed in Lima around midnight only to find space in the airport to nap before the 6am connection to Cusco. I happily snacked on some McDonalds in the food court to help pass the time.
ATM is indispensible. They don't like old worn looking money.
It's good to know a little Spanish, if only to impress your companions.
Hasta la vista!
