I don't think I'll go into everything we did in Memphis, but here's a quick summary...
We both had a BLAST!!! If you haven't ever gone to Memphis YOU SHOULD!!! it really is a cool place.
We went to Graceland and because Zach is a member of the press, we got in free...not only to the house, but also the Elvis' car meusum, Elvis After Dark, and Elvis's airplanes and Sincerly Elvis. I don't think Zach was a huge Elvis fan before the tour, but by the end of the day, he certainly was! ;)
We also went to Sun Studio where Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and MANY more artists first started...they haven't changed anything in the studio...the same floor and same ceiling, etc...so we've walked where very many famous people have walked!!! WOOHOO!!! They still had the microphone where Elvis recorded songs... I think Zach got a pic of it. We could actually touch it... too many people around to do so.
We also made it down to Beale street...in fact, we somehow went every night...there really wasn't much to do in the evenings other than Beale. We had a good time. Sat night, we ate at "Brazil de Texas" place... it was truly awesome!!! The waiters bring all your food to you... and I mean A TON of food! They had all kinds of cuts of meat...many that I haven't had before, like lamb. They also had some "weird" stuff like fried bananas and something else I'm not sure what it was... The waiters just come by with the meat on the stick-thingy and cut off a slice for you. If you ever go to Memphis, you MUST eat there....however, we didn't know the price when we walked in... for the two of us, it was over $120 with the tip... and no free refills!!!! at that price, I think they could afford a little juice for us!! ;)
We also went to the "Pink Palace" which has an IMAX theater there where we watched a movie from Tom Hanks about "Walking on the Moon". It was a good movie and very informative... but it just wasn't a GREAT movie for IMAX... I would'va sufficed to see it on tv... oh-well. IMAX movies are suppose to have BIG explosiions and "rock your world" while watching them. ;)
Pink Palace also had a Magic exhibit that we went to. It was fun. In one pic you can see where I got my head cut off. There also was a exhibit that had a lot of stuffed animals in it... it was cool. The only bad thing about the Pink Palace Mansion is that you don't really get to see the mansion much. You get to go in to the main hallway and the wings of the front hallway, but that's it. Plus, they had taken out almost all the furniture so the rooms were bare... honestly, Zach and I were disappointed about the Mansion.
We also went to the Rock and Soul Meusem. It was awesome. They don't allow you to take pics there so we just got pics outside. Btw... in all the places, they wouldn't allow you to use flash, so that's why some pics are darker than others... Rock and Soul is another great place to learn about how rock and soul got started and all the singers that sang rock and soul. The only thing was is that they didn't have ANYTHING on Ray Charles... I'm not sure why. The exhibit ended with the Beatles and barely mentioned them. But all in all, GREAT place to go!
Monday we made it to the Memphis Zoo (again for free). This is by far the best Zoo I've been to. It's also probably the largest zoo I've been to (hence all the pictures). We ate lunch at the little cafe there and they had windows next to 2 monkeys...The monkeys were teenages and were putting on a show for us...it was the best part of the zoo trip for me. Zach got them on video... if you really wanna see it, let me know.
We also went to the Peabody Hotel. This is probably the most famous hotel in Memphis besides Heartbreak Hotel (at the end of lonely street). Anyways..., they have ducks that live on their roof and they have the ducks march into the lobby from the elevator on red carpet into the hotel lobby's fountain. They march in at 11:00 everyday and march out at 5:00. We made it one day at the 5:00 show. It truly is an amazing thing to see. The lobby was EXTREMELY dark however; and our pics didn't turn out that great. Zach got a movie of them too. In it, you can see all the cameras flashing. Zach said it looked like the papparrazi.
I also sent some pics called "various". They have pics from the Mississippi River park and the vistor's welcome buidling. They have a statute of Elvis and BB King there and some funky egg.
Okay, I think that about does our trip to memphis. I know I left a LOT of things out, but only wanted to hit the highlights and not bore you too bad. We did have a blast.
Enjoy the pics!!!
I wonder if we can do Graceland, Sun Studios, and Rock n Sould Museum all in one day???
With all the stuff we did at Graceland, no we didn't have time to do the Rock n Soul Museum in 1 day. We did do the Sun Studios in the same day as Graceland. Rock n Soul took about 1 1/2 hours to visit.
We had a great time in Memphis.
Good luck.
