This bench defines the undulating edge of the public park in the residential district designed by Gaudi. The backdrop is Barcelona. The serpintine back of the bench was designed around the curve of a workman's spine. It looks uncomfortable but is surprisingly well fitted to the human body.
The park is an open space, similar to a "public green". It isn't green but covered in pebbles that act as a filter for water draining off the hillside as it travels through the floor of the "green" to columns underneath. The water flows to a cistern to be used later for watering the gardens. A beautiful, functional design.
This is the underside of the public "green". We were stunned by the mosaic medallions for their color & intricate designs. Its public drainage wearing jewelry...and its gorgeous. Can you imagine working on a ceiling with such variations in concavity & slope? Typical of Gaudi, his surfaces & forms attempt to replicate the patterns & irregularites he found in nature.
