As Amy and I were just zipping up our last of five bags, we got a text message from Dana -- their initial flight on American had been cancelled the night before (thunderstorms or some such) and the airline had rerouted them through Dallas (that is, from Detroit to Dallas to La Guardia) with an arrival of 9:50 p.m., ten minutes before our Aerlingus flight left JFK. After some invective filled texts, and some ticket counter litigation, they managed to get on a flight direct to Newark, arriving at 5ish, plenty of time to make the several-legged bus transfer to JFK.
We all met up at the Aerlingus counter in JFK about two hours before departure and shuffled into the terminal, with a stop at Shannon's pub for a celebratory stout toast.
After sitting for an hour or so on the tarmac, we left the ground in New York, and were off.
If we do Shannon-Dublin-Waterford-Cork-Dingle-Ring of Kerry-Kenmare, we can be fairly certain that the drive time between each place will be between 2-3 hours (not bad) except in the case of Ring of Kerry-Kenmare, which is more like 4. But since the scenic drive is the event (like driving up the Pacific Coast Highway), that's cool too.
I revise my earlier statement about driving times. I remember the corkscrew roads and hairpin turns, the sheep chilling in the middle of the road, and the fact that everything's in KM. Let's give ourselves at least one hour above the stated distance.
Ireland is a beautiful country, but I think I couldn't drive a car there because the circulation is done by the left side... But I'd like to know Ireland!
