Left around 2:30 in the afternoon and hit a lot of traffic before even getting on to 95. We were worried because Josiah was already complaining about the traffic and we weren’t even out of Boston. Saw a man reading a book while driving, with a dollar bill as a book mark. Arrianna thought it was a perfect combination of Mama Julie and Mama Patty—books and monies.
Finally got to 95 and started the actual driving at around 3:30. We decided to have an early dinner at Cracker Barrel in Providence, RI at around 4:30. It was great—nobody else there on a Tuesday afternoon. The trip was smooth through Connecticut and New York (mostly). In New Jersey Julie didn’t see a sign that the road was closed in time to merge right, so we drove for quite a while on a closed highway. We half expected the road to just stop or end in an incomplete bridge, but there was no sign of construction really and a few other cars who’d made the same mistake, which was a little comforting. Eventually we were able to get off at a service area and get back on the right road. Really they need some cones or something if they’re going to close a whole road. We got in to DC at about 12:45 AM. Julie managed to shave 45 minutes off our usual time. Ten hours of driving and no parking in gated community due to construction. Arrgh.
