Wayne's Birthday Trip to Bangor
Ok so this was a quick trip to Bangor to celebrate Wayne's Birthday. We left Friday about 12:30 PM, so that Wayne could have a few hours of sleep before leaving. The drive was really easy straight up 95..that is after a stop at the bank and Cumberland Farms for drinks for the ride. Everything moved right along until Augusta, where Wayne insisted that we stop for some lunch...
Western Avenue in Augusta is always a speedway, but add in a police man protecting a fallen snow bank, which prevented traffic from using one lane and a McDonalds that's on the other side of a divided highway and you could have travel disaster. Instead you have Jody who outlines the route around the Shaw's parking lot, that gets us out of the traffic jam and swapped around to the correct side of the highway. I'm sorry but McDonalds is McDonalds...the one in Augusta is made kinda nice by a fireplace and clean new seating...the playground was closed due to excess snow...so I really can't comment.
Back on the highway after two complete circles...the speed was greatly increased as we traveled threw no-mans land (yes we did wave at Waterville, but I don't think they knew they were missing us). We arrived in Bangor and almost went to Orono..but we figured out our mistake and once back on the 95 found the Four Points Hotel really quickly. Now finding the parking lot for the Four Points..that took two trips around the airport loop before we decided we were parking in the no parking until somebody could tell us where to go (be nice it's Waynes Birthday).
If you haven't guessed the Four Points was at the Bangor Airport. This was Waynes choice, mostly because there was an indoor pool, which to Wayne equates with warmth. As there is a walkway between the hotel lobby and the Airport, the lobby is on the second floor which makes the driving up to the entrance along with the snow very strange. You walk in a door on the right there is an exercise room, on the left a flight of stairs and straight on a elevator.
Once we found the front desk on the second floor, we walked into a snafu which involved two oriental women, very little english, and a lack of reservation. The front desk clerk was really good at figuring out they had booked with some on line service with another hotel. He even was able to work with them while checking us in. Part of checking us in involved getting us to the correct parking lot..just like any airport there were lots of parking lots...so around the airport we went again!
Our room turned out to be on the third floor. It was comprised of a King size bed, a desk, two chairs (one was the desk chair) and a television credenza. There was a great deal of open space, matter of fact we could have easily danced if we had music. Wayne turned up the heat the minute we arrived. The other odd thing was that the lamps (on the desk and two bedside the bed) were unplugged...so at first you thought you had no light..but then you figured it out and craweled around to plug them in.
Off to the pool we went. The pool was behind the fitness room near the ground floor entrance. It was a small cement L shapped...really nice steps ...really cold water. I suppose in the Winter in Maine with no others swimming in pool the idea of warmth was a little far fetched...but when Wayne mentioned that "My goosebumps have goosebumps" we broke into hysterical laughter. Wayne quick left the pool, to sit huddled in pool towels for warmth, while, I being the the great water baby did swim for a few minutes, however let it be noted that I did not get my head wet (water was too cold for that).
