Our plan was to leave Woodbridge, VA around 7pm after work for Greensboro, NC. We would stay at the Comfort Suite hotel and head to Asheville the next morning.
We packed a lot of food; spaghetti, ham, cheese, and rolls so we can save money on the trip. The traffic at night is good. I admit it is not fun to drive in the dark but it's better than being stuck in traffic.
This turned out to be possibly the best hike we've ever been on. We headed out on the Grandfather trail; it was challenging, steep enough in places to require cables, and occasionally, heavy ladders in order to ascend the rock slope. The woods smelled strongly of evergreen, especially higher up. We would like to grade this trail for 6 stars.
After climbing the ladder to the top of Mcrae peak, an awesome view in all directions, we decided return by way of the Underwood trail. The path was hot, rocky, and mostly woods. It was a nice change of pace, though. We thought it had only take two hours, but turned out to have been four.
After the hike, we checked out the wildlife zoo, and got some fudge and a sundae at the nearby shop.
