1 MONTH TO GO!!!
It is truly hard to believe that in 1 month Martin, Jenny, Amber & I will be boarding a plane to go see Tina and ultimately take Europe by storm! You have to understand when Tina said she was moving to Paris for a year for work I knew this was my once in a lifetime opportunity. Not only will we be able to hang with T, but also we will be able to use Paris as our homebase to explore and discover the rest of Europe. For me traveling to Europe for my first time I must say that: "Truly dreams can come true!"
As I write this with much anticipation and excitement, I must stop and say thank you to #1 my mom and brother who without them I would not be able to leave work and take so much time off. Also using the family business credit card many of the hotels we are staying at are free due to the reward points. A huge factor in deciding if Martin & I could afford it. No words can express how grateful I am that you both had a hand in my dream. You two will be getting the best souvenirs (Eiffel Tower magnets perhaps? You'll just have to wait and see!!) #2 To my sisters and father who played a less direct role in our trip but nontheless equally important. I thank you for your sage advice and your geniune interests in our plans. You will be getting much crappier souvenirs I'm afraid. :) #3 To Martin who I will be travelilng with exclusively for the second half of our trip, thank you so much for your enthusiasm even if it means you are seeing something for the fifth or so time, and thank you for sacrificing 1 whole month so that I can realize my dream. I promise this will be the best time you've ever had in Europe. And last but not least to Tina my best friend, the impetus for this whole thing. Remember the days of high school when we'd skip class and go back to my moms house and play spades and hang? Who would ever think back then that we would be meeting together in Paris the City of Light? Surreal totally surreal.
Ok with that out of the way lets get down to business, as of now this is what I have accomplished in planning our trip:
-Created Europe binder with Country dividers (yes color-coded) all paperwork organized
-Created 2 Back-Up Files with all paperwork to stay here and to stay with Tina in Paris
-Booked Rountrip Airfare Virgin Atlantic MIA-LHR
-Booked Eurostar R/T LON-PAR
-Booked R/T train from Paris to Amsterdam (Thalys)
-Booked 1way train from Paris to Interlaken (SBB)
-Booked Overnight train from Munich to Venice (T6 DB Bahn)
-Booked EasyJet flights from Venice to Rome, and from Rome to Paris
-Booked All Hotels through reward points (Yikes!! Does anybody out there have any experiences like this? Did the hotels have your reservation, I used Bank of America Worldpoints. Any feedback is appreciated)
-Booked Royal Castle Tour Neuschwanstein, Venice Walking Tour & Gondola Ride (35min), Rome Hop-on, Hop-off all with reward points. (Still have some more activities to book especially in Paris, any suggestions? Was thinking of trying to use points for a Visite Card or museum pass, is it worth getting these two as we will be in Paris on May, 6, 10, 20-25.)
-Made reservations for Shakepeare Globe theatre (A Midsummer's Night Dream Matinee)
-Made reservations for Teatro Dell'Opera in Rome (Madama Butterfly- opening night)
-Made reservations for Hang Glidiing in the Swiss Alps through www.hangglidinginterlaken.com
And thats it. Anybody reading this: I NEED YOUR HELP!! At this time I need to book the train from Interlaken to Zurich and am stiil awaitng Rail Europe to display the fare I need for the overnight train from Zurich to Munich. (Supposed to be $210 but I need to wait 30 dys before departure to book. I really hope the fare will show up it is the train that leaves at 10:40pm on 5/12 and all of April shows the $210 fare, so far none of May does.) Does anybody have experience with Rail Europe? Do you know if you get closer to departure date will the fare's actually go down?
Also it seems we will be in Venice during the festa della sensa (May 15-16). Has anybody experienced this before? Is this actual date for the festival? Will it be jam packed that weekend- we have our hotel (Venezia 2000) on Lido, will that offer some breathing room or is it really out there and far?
Thanks for reading, any comments and suggestions really help, I will try to update this as we go so not only family and friends can follow us but in a way, everybody can!
Happy Travels,
Bobby Beebe
Thanks for your comment any & all feedback is always appreciated!! Even though it seems so close, I must admit this month seems to be dragging already. Almost there, almost there...
I'm sure there is a night train from Paris to Interlaken, I just don't know which would be the cheapest option for you. I will tell you this, for our tickets I went with the SBB website (Swiss Rail) to book our Paris - Interlaken (via Basel) leg. For both of us including bank fees, taxes, and reservations it cost us about $100 per person. I don't know if that is good or not (as I hear the Swiss Rail is pricey) but for our day trip it fit into our schedule perfectly. For your overnight trip, I honestly do not know what is best, maybe try SNCF (French Rail) and SBB and use that as your starting point.
Hope this Helps and Happy Travels,
Bobby
we book the hotel fairly cheap (http://www.parishotels.com) , try to eat in the small cafes , food is great and not expensive at all...
Good luck
I cannot tell you how excited I am reading through your day by day and seeing all of the things that you are going to do!!! This is an absolutely amazing trip and I am so proud of you – your planning is flawless and the fact that you get to do so much of this trip on reward points is such an inspiring lesson for me!!
Midsummer at the Globe and opening night for Madam Butterfly!! These are once in a lifetime..in fact all of this is! I am so excited for you that you are going to Neuschwanstein! If I could do my big Europe trip all over I would totally steal your plans (well except I would be staying at the Four Seasons and the Ritz with Jenny Jones, but we would let you come and hang in our lobbies ;) )
I can’t wait for you to see Venice, Rome, London, Paris, and the Swiss Alps will be the most beautiful place you have ever seen. Can’t wait for you to tell me all about Munich and your hang gliding…all of it!!!
You only live once, and this IS a dream come true, so do whatever you want when you get there, whatever makes you happy! and if you come home broke, just know the memories you will have will last a lifetime; their value is golden.
Have fun, be safe and we can’t wait for the 3000 shot slideshow on your return!!
(For my praise and priceless words of wisdom..please elevate me to better-than-crappy souvenir. )
Love ya!
Jen
Reading through the comments I must say I am totally taken back!!! This trip means a lot to me but to share it with family and now also with some new friends makes it even more so. JCPC & Cindy, thanks for your suggestions- they sound exciting, affordable & innovative (never really thought about the top of Eiffel Tower at night- will look into it)!
But to Jen, I must say what you wrote really touched me. Not in that creepy, scary, "let me buy you a drink" way but in a sentimental, brotherly, heart-warming kind of way. I did have tacos for dinner last night so it could just be heart-burn but I think it's what you wrote. You talk about inspiration and it’s funny because when I think about my inspiration for this trip I think about you! I'd always admired your ability not only to chase after your dreams but to actualize them, making them a reality. I've never seen another person get what they want more than you and I can honestly say it is not due to luck, circumstance or through any special favors but from true hard work and sheer determination (I guess that's why you're up in a room and I'm stuck in your "lobbies"). Seriously though, dear sister, you are truly a go-getter, a natural leader and if I could do half of what you've already done in my whole, entire lifetime it would be a pretty, damn good life. You're the best!
Happy Travels,
Bobby
P.S. - You're officially upgraded to higher level status in souvenir quality. (I see a new Big Ben Shot Glass in your future!!!!)
I booked the Venice tour through Bank of America WorldPoints (I totally have no idea how many points this cost me), however I do know that Worldpoints uses www.viator.com for some of their activities. If you go to their website and type in their code, "2495TOUR2" it should pull it up. The site says it's at $54.36 per person but you have to put in your exact dates for actual pricing. If you have any kind of points it may be beneficial to look into using them instead, it was for me!! Hope this helps and...
Happy Travels,
Bobby
And my last, most memorable part of our trip, was buying a bottle of wine for me and my friends to share and sitting on the steps of Sacre Couer to watch the sun set. Breath takingly amazing. I hope you enjoy your trip - it sounds completely amazing! I'm sure you're getting even more excited now that it's getting so close! -Abby
