Ember, Desiree (my niece) and I went to Turks and Caicos in May of 2008. We stayed at the Beaches Ultra All-Inclusive resort over there. It was nice but when I made the reservation 4 months prior to me going, I didn't know that there would be construction happening at the time that I would be there. Apparently, they didn't report it on the website until a month before I went. Beaches was expanding their resort to include a giant water park and another luxury series of suites (the Italian Village). If I had known about this, I would have put off my Turks and Caicos trip another year.
We stayed in the French village. The pool closest to our rooms were nice but the girls wanted to stay at the kids pirate pool area because they had a restaurant nearby. All they did was eat. lol I went to a casino one night while I was over there and we went to a go-cart park one day also. But we spent most of our time on the resort. There was so much to do. Desiree and I learned how to scuba dive. When it was time to do it in the open sea, I couldn't because I couldn't keep my mouth on the regulator (my mouth was still a little paralyzed from the Bells Palsy I had earlier in the year). But Desiree was able to scuba dive and she loved it. It was worth the money to see her happy.
Ember participated in a childrens fashion show on the resort and I played Texas Hold Em one evening with other guests at the resort. The girls and I spent most of our time either at the beach or pool. The weather was beautiful.
For you divers, it's a great place to learn or if you're already certified to dive twice a day in crystal aquablue water. The salt water isn't salty like the Atlantic northeast coast of US(NJ,NC). My son and wife spent most of their time on kobycats (2 man sailing) and snorkeling, which is great at Grace Bay. The shelve is probably 400 yards off of the beach and drops down 1000 feet and the current out there is fairly strong if your diving. The scuba boat drops you off at 35 foot depth and on any given day including rough seas is clear for as far as you can see. It's the perfect place to get certified. Beaches does offer a resort dives once a day for noncertifed people. This is great because you can see if scuba diving is right for you. While we were there, we saw a spotted kingray with a width span of about 30 ft and front to tail about 50 ft. You may think I'm blowing this out of proportion, but I'm not. Barracudas run 6 ft down there, but scarce. We were lucky to see one with our divemaster Fiona during one of our final tests. Schools of Black French angel fish were 14 inches long. You can find Groupers nestled in small like caves close to the dropoff. Parrotfish, goatfish, squirrelfish, wrasses, fairy basslet, and hogfish. All these fish are noted in my dive logs.
Anyway, you don't have to go to Beaches Resort at Grace Bay to enjoy yourself. If your single or a couple, their are other resorts along the Grace Bay beach area. Whether you want to relax, snorkel, scuba, or just enjoy the sun down there, it's an incredible vacation that's worth every penny.
