New Journal Entry
We started off great, left a little earlier than planned which was amazing. I was nervous about the drive in the winter but everything went fine so far. In Oakland it was sunny and we thought the weather would be nice for the trip. By the time we reached Redding it was raining. The rain turned into snow just as we crossed the Oregon border. The wind picked up and it was cold. Snow trucks were plowing and that's when I saw the dreaded snow chains sign. Luckily it wasn't required but the road was slick. As soon as the elevation dropped a little the snow stopped, about an hour or two down the road. Then when the elevation rose again more snow, still no chains required but they tell you to carry them on the sign. (We have no chains!) We made it to Salem and it seemed as if the road in front of us just stretched out forever. It took much longer than what we planned to get to Portland. We we drove through Portland it was so tempting to stop but we had to get to fort Lewis before midnight (New Year's). The city it lit up at night. There is a double decker bridge that we went across. Ton's of bright lights. On the way back I hope we stop, it will be daylight though. We arrived in Fort Lewis at 8:30. We had to check in at the military base to get the visitor's pass. We stayed up and played cards, relaxed and toasted.
