TRAVELING FOR CHOCOLATE? LIFE COULD BE WORSE.
My job as a chocolate importer for Nirvana Chocolates and Chocolatesource.com has many perks, but perhaps my personal favorite is that I get to visit Bruges! You may know this city from the movie "In Bruges" where Colin Farrell plays a character who complains that it's all old buildings and museums. Me, I'm more like the Brendan Gleeson character, I love this place! It is truly one of Belgium’s most beautiful cities and the home of some of the world's best chocolate.
This trip I’m actually here with a Travel Channel crew in tow. They are following me with a camera as I look for new products for my company…that part is new!
I can't wait to get there! No matter how many times I make the trip, something about Bruge’s cobblestone streets and gothic architecture make me feel like I’ve just traveled back in time. It’s a small city, only about 120,000 people actually live here full time, but every year over 3 million tourists (and chocoholics) from all over the world come here to soak up the old world charm and treat themselves to the very best Belgian chocolates.
To say that the Belgians are passionate about chocolate would definitely be an understatement. In Bruges there’s a chocolate shop nearly everywhere you look, each one more delicious than the last.
The chocolatiers here are true artists. I could spend days just touring the shop windows (with an occasional taste of course!).
One of my main missions here is to find a specific new product for our company. We’re interested in a caramel and sea salt chocolate we think will be really popular in the United States. So I'm off!
