After a quick trip to Sunriver for Charlie's wedding, John and I departed out of PDX to our first stop: Munich! We arrived in Chicago around dinnertime and grabbed a quick bite before our 8-hour flight. The plane was pretty full and for some reason Luftansa booked us two aisle seats across from one another. It's hard to get much rest on the aisle seats unless you have someone or something to lay against, so we didn't sleep at all. We arrived a but after noon and it seemed like we were the only international arrival at that time. We breezed through with our passports five minutes - very nice. John and I took the train from the airport which brought us right to our hotel (maybe 50 yards from the central terminal). We were exhausted, so promised ourselves that we'd take just a 2 hour nap ad then go out for dinner and a walk. We headed to the Englischer Garten, the large central park in Munich. We strolled around and stopped by the Chinesischen Turm, probably the most famous beer garden in the city. Beer holds a special place in my heart, so it was heaven! John picked up two huge steins and we grabbed some roast chicken and sausages- yum! We heard a couple of Americans chatting near us, so we asked them to take a photo. One was from Atlanta, so we talked about the ASU/Georgia game in September. Their tour guide insisted on giving me a a nice kiss. Munich actually remind me a lot of Portland. Very green, very social. The weather is gorgeous. It was probably low 80's today with a very pleasant evening. We stopped by the Marienplatz square with the glockenspiel, walked around a bit and headed back to our room. The hotel is gorgeous! John is already sleep so I better turn in too! More updates to come!
Sorry you didn't get any sleep on the plane. We were pooped after the wedding and that "easy" drive seemed forever. We did stop in Dunsmuir for lunch at your parents' favorite spot. Surprisingly we crossed paths with the Mordaunts at a gas station in Klameth Falls and decided to meet for lunch. They loved Cornerstone even though the service is so SLOW! Great food though!
Aren't those beers great! I hope Laura gets home before you leave. I'm sure she has some great haunts to introduce you to and will make your stay in Munich even more memorable.
Fun being with you two in Oregon.
Hope you enjoy the Baverian countryside as much as we did. Oh, I'm jealous!
