Planning for Arrival

Planning began in September with an offer from a friend to provide free accommodations in Menton, France. A ticket was soon purchased and the dates set.
Now, I have begun searching in earnest for a place to stay in Nice from my arrival on December 13th until the arrival of the rest of my party on December 19th and 20th.
Using several guide books and the internet, I am looking for a hostel with a cost of <20 Euros a night. The ticket I purchased (arriving a week early) was about $100 cheaper than the later ticket. Therefore, I get an extra week in Nice at almost no cost if I can find a hostel for less than 20 euros a night.
