In Memphis

Hello from Memphis

I watched the Atlanta skyline fade in my rear view mirror a little later in the morning than I had planned but that didn't make it any less sweet.  FINALLY .... After months of planning I am on the road. I turned up the music and took I 20 west out of the Peach state headed toward Birmingham, AL.   The sun was bright, the sky was a brilliant blue and the clouds were so big and puffy you could have easily jumped from one to another. I picked up US 78 in Birmingham and continued west through Tupelo, MS, the birth place of Elvis Presley.  Spent some time hearing a bit of gospel music in the church he attended as a child.  It reminded me of the church I grew up in.  I also went in the tiny two room house where he was born.  His dad borrowed $180 to build it but couldn't afford to pay it back so it was lost.  The same year Elvis bought Graceland he was able to buy his childhood home. After getting a few road necessities (hot boiled peanuts and a Slim Jim)  I continued west on 78.    I rolled into Memphis with just enough time to catch the last shuttle through the mighty gates of Graceland.  I must say I was thoroughly impressed by the home of the King of Rock n' Roll even with its green shag carpets.  I stood in awe of the endless rows of awards, sequined jump suits and even his pink Cadillac.  Today’s 400 miles was full of music heritage with a tasty touch of Memphis BBQ.  :)

Talk about this trip (10)
Kudos on the Road Trip! It's "Now or Never"! However, I am "All Shook Up"! You are one "Hard Headed Woman" as I am still not speaking to you over the Graceland situation. All I have to say "Don't Be Cruel"! Graceland is sacred ground for me and the fact that you are getting there first is "Too Much". "I Beg of You" please do right by Graceland-listen to Elvis as you are driving there, like "Jailhouse Rock", "Surrender" to the sights of the grounds and his home, recognize his contributions to music and pay homeage to a true King of Rock n'Roll:-) "A Fool Such As I" will make it to Graceland one day so "Don't" feel to bad.

Love your "Little Sister",
Holly

Wow!
I'm a stranger stuck in a far away place right now, in Iraq! I have just begun planning a cross country trip myself and I'm excited to see how yours goes. I'll be here with you til the end! I plan on taking my husband with me on the trip, but have thought of other people I'd like to go with or even just going by myself. I'm excited for you, just as much as I'm excited for myself. Thanks for the confidence and encouragement you portray to all of us other female discoverers.

Sincerely,
Rochelle

Hi Heather I really hope you enjoy your road trip as good as you have it written and planned, I wish I was there too, be careful and lookout for those not looking out for you. Am from the Cayman Islands in the British West Indies, but I love road trips in the same manner that you do, I been across America several times via Greyhound Bus. Four years ago I drove from Miami Fla, to Baniff National Park in Canada and back to Miami that was one hell of a long road trip, I did it in three weeks I drove eighteen hours a day most days, my butt is still num from that trip four years later (SMILE) but I will never forget it and I would do it again. So far I have been to 46 states the two I've not been to is VT and SD, Montana is one of my favorites also Glacier National Park, Montana and Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, and Grand Canyon. Arizona, I will keep posted to view more of your pictures of your great road trip. Enjoy the scenes. Jahleb Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands.
