Our flight from Huntington, WV to Fort Lauderdale wasn’t scheduled to leave until 7pm that evening so we had pretty much all day to finalize our packing, and pick up a few last minute things. I had to get my allergy shot today since we’d be gone all week and I’m on weekly shots. So Kev went with me to my allergy doctor and waited ever so patiently while I received my three injections. On our way back we went by CVS and picked up a few extra bottles of suntan lotion.
We had already dropped off Dexter (our beloved Cavalier King Charles) at my parents over the weekend while we were celebrating my birthday on the 4th of July. But I was already missing that lil guy.
We finished packing everything up and decided to leave our house around 4pm. Allegiant Air requires at least a 2-hour check in so that gave us an hour to get to HTS. We made it in under an hour naturally because I was driving the Jeep and I like to go fast. Check-in was smooth and since we had about 2 hours to kill before our flight left we dropped into the Airport Diner to grab a snack to tide us over.
After sitting in the lobby for approximately an hour or so, there was an announcement that our flight was delayed leaving Fort Lauderdale to Huntington so the flight back down from HTS to FLL was going to be delayed. It was only delayed about half an hour but it seemed like an eternity.
The entire flight was a little bumpy. Kev is not a fan of turbulence so he was a nervous wreck. I tried to distract him best I could, but don’t’ think I succeeded all that well. He’s so friendly though he makes friends everywhere he goes and ended up talking to the 2 guys across the aisle from us for awhile. That seemed to calm him down a bit. At least until he mentioned we were going parasailing. Then those guys were all like “No way I’d do that, they take you out far enough to where the sharks are”. So that fueled my being in the ocean with sharks fear even more.
The most annoying 2 little brats were seated behind us though. I swear I came so close to turning around and smacking them. Before the plane even took off they were all like “The planes going to crash, we’re all going to die!” And they kept that up pretty much the entire flight; especially when there was turbulence. Their dad was seated across the aisle from them and never said anything.
After arriving at FLL we waited for what seemed like an eternity for our bags. I think we landed around 9:30pm. We had planned on trying for a late dinner at Smokey Bones but after waiting until after 10pm to get our bags we decided against it.
We picked up our rental at Royal Rent-a-Car, a gorgeous white Mustang convertible and were off to our hotel for the night. Since we were splurging so much the rest of the week, we opted for a cheap room for the night at a Ramada Inn close to the airport.
After Kev got us lost and let me drive, we made it to the hotel. Check-in was a breeze and we were starving so we ordered a pizza from a local pizzeria to be delivered. But it took them like an hour to get there and then it was like 30 bucks for a large pizza and a 2-liter of Mt.Dew. WTF? But all was well; our fine dining experience would improve greatly as the week went on.
After our “fancy Italian dinner” we snuggled up in bed to get ready for the big drive tomorrow.
