We started off the day by getting up and having a somewhat boring continental breakfast at the hotel. I don't usually expect much at one of those, but that was one weak breakfast.
So we began out adventures for the day and headed towards Mammoth Cave. My dad called while we were on the way out, said they had just made it into town. So we pulled in at Big Mike's Rock and Gift Shop to give them time to catch up to us. I don't know why, but I love that place. It just fits in so well with Cave City's nickname of "Tacky Town USA".
After Big Mike's we went on to Mammoth Cave and got on the first tour that we could. We took the Historic Tour, which I have been on before, but I don't think anyone else had been. Mandie has never been to a cave at all, so it was all new to her. It is a pretty good tour, about 2 miles long and 2 1/2 hours. So you don't move too fast, you don't miss out on a whole lot either. It gives you time to actually look around and see some things. Still, every time I go on it I find something new.
The Historic Tour wore us down pretty good. It worked up a good hunger as well, since all I had to eat that day was from the continental breakfast from the hotel, which wasn't much. So on the way back to the hotel, we stopped at the Watermill Restaurant to get something to eat. They had a great lunch buffet, with good home cooked style food, much better than anything you could get at Cracker Barrel. I would recommend the Watermill to anyone looking for real food.
After a good lunch we headed back to the hotel for a quick nap.
When we finally woke up, we went back out expecting to find something to do. This was probably the most disappointing part of the trip, because there wasn't really anything going on around time. I suspect that it's because it is a tourist town, and that it is still a little early in the year for everything to be open.
We did manage to find a good Pizza Hut. Service was really great, something I'm not really use to back home.
After Pizza Hut we wound up just going back to the hotel. A nice little rain shower moved in, so we moved our chairs outside the door and sit out and watched the rain for a little while. I listened to my Shortwave for a while and picked up some really neat stations.
After that was bed time and the end of Day 2.
