What we did: • Sleepwalked in to Barcelona at 6am, local time
About four hours too early to check into our hotel (right). • Had lunch at the mighty Pinotxo, a lunch counter in the middle of the bustling Boqueria Market. Seating and serving was surprisingly orderly.
• Tried coca for the first time
The pastry, not the narcotic. I like it! But I’d love to hunt down a savory version
• Took a long walk around the and main shopping drags
What I learned: • If you end up at your hostel too early, beg the hotel staff to let you crash in the common area
We wasted a lot of time, well, wasting a lot of time before we finally gave up and did this. • Your opinion of a new city (especially Barcelona) depends largely on when you get there
It never fails. We always get to Spain in time to see shutters drawn, and kitchens closed.
I’m now learning that if a city’s cool isn’t hiding, or napping, it’s probably not there. But at least wait for siesta to finish before making that call.
