Do you have any information on train travel in Italy. The websites are a nightmare. Is it easy to buy tickets at the train stations? Is it about the same price at the station vs the websites? Leaving for Italy in 12 days. Visiting Florence, Milan, Venice, Rome, Naples, and coast.
You can buy tickets at the station or at local news stands around town (supposedly, haven't tried to yet) We'll find out later today as we're heading to Pisa/Lucca tomorrow morning. I'll post an update later
It's really easy to buy tickets at the station and cheaper than buying them online. You'll save a few euro by just buying a ticket at the station. One thing to remember at the station is to validate your ticket. Once you purchase your ticket, take it to the yellow box located at the start of the platform you're leaving from and insert one end of the ticket into the slot on the yellow box. It will print a timestamp on the end of the ticket. At sometime during your journey, a ticket collector will ask to inspect your ticket (maybe).
You can usually purchase a ticket at either the ticket office or at one of the automated ticket machines. If you're at a major station, most of the auto machines will accept a credit card or cash. At some of the regional stations (for example, Lucca) the machines will only accept cash. You can also purchase ticket from most newstands.
Both options (buying at station or newsstand) are cheaper than purchasing online.
