Marnie and Steve's Tour du Mont Blanc and France - Summer 2008

A trip from June 20, 2008 to July 15, 2008, travelling to Geneva, Chamonix, ALBOUSSI RE, Courmayeur
What makes the Tour du Mont Blanc one of the world’s classic … More
What makes the Tour du Mont Blanc one of the world’s classic hikes? It’s the perfect mix of awe-inspiring mountain views and the vibrant influence of three distinct European cultures -- French, Swiss and Italian. Hiking 100 miles with only a light pack as we circumnavigate the sparkling glaciers of Mont Blanc (15,771’), Western Europe’s highest peak, we’ll cross borders by foot and experience challenging but spectacular hiking in the Alps. Our expert guides lead us from village to village along high trails into a photographer’s dream landscape. Our cultural delights range from the lovely medieval city of Courmayeur, Italy to the French resort town of Chamonix and to quaint alpine villages in Switzerland where we’ll enjoy delicious and hearty meals consisting of fresh ingredients including locally produced breads and cheeses. Our lodging includes one night in a mountain refuge and the rest in comfortable hotels and auberges.

After the 13 day trek, we'll rent a car and drive into the heart of France to meet up with the Tour de France. Follow our progress daily at this site.

We made it to Geneva!

Hi from Geneva! We made it safely and rather easily.  All of our flights were on time, and our connections were simple. Arriving here in Geneva, we got free metro rides on their train system which brought us to within a few walkng blocks of the hotel. We were into our hotel room by10 a.m. and out exploring along Lake Leman as the French call it or Lake Geneva for the rest of us.  We rented bikes sort of -- they're free -- and pedaled around the lake for almost two hours.  We saw the jet of water shooting 453 feet into the air from every angle. The jet is interesing and unique now because there is a giant soccer ball somehow floating in the air over the top of it The ball is there in honor of the Euro Cup which is like the SuperBowl, Kentucky Derby, and World Series all in one.

All of that pedaling and site seeing stoked our appetite so we found Marnie's favorite -- a pizza place. After eating, jet lag set in and we returned to the room for a little siesta. Now, it's 4 p.m. here and time to head out for more exploring.

Looking out of our room window, we see a couple of sex shops and prostitutes. Ooops, there goes one of the prostitutes. The economy must not be too bad., huh Bil? The view from the room is just of a city street. It might sound bad, but it's a very clean city. It feels very safe as we make our way around.

We'll write more later. The weather is awesome with lots of sun, cool lake and mountain breezes. We can see the snow capped Alps in the distance. Very beautiful. Miss you al!
